The WOLVERINES Are Still Marvel’s Greatest Comic Team

Marvel’s Wolverine is an insanely popular character who’s been part of the X-Men, Avengers, and even the Fantastic Four. Comic creators used to joke that when Wolverine’s the guest star “you know the book will sell.” However, one storyline took this idea to a ridiculous extreme.
In the fan favorite Marvel comic Exiles, readers followed an ever-changing group of heroes from alternate Marvel universes who hopped from parallel world to parallel world righting wrongs. At one point, however, the forces behind the team decided to assemble an all-new team made up of multiple versions of Wolverine!
The story took place in the storyline “The New Exiles” which ran in Exiles #85-86 by writer Tony Bedard and artists Paul Pelletier and Rick Magyar. In the previous storyline, the previous Exiles (Blink, Sabretooth, Longshot, Spider-Man 2099, Power Princess, Heather Hudson, and Morph) were all fired by the extraterrestrial insects responsible for leaping them from one Earth to another. Realizing they needed a new team, the bugs decided to find alternate versions of the one man who’s the best there is at what he does.
Initially, it looks like the bugs put together a team of six Wolverines, each from an alternate world based on a different aspect of the “mainstream” Wolverine’s history. They include:
- Logan: An X-Man from the Days of Future Past timeline, pulled out before he was killed by a Sentinel
- Patch: A Wolverine living on the island of Madripoor who hides his mutant identity by wearing an eye patch (yes, really)
- Zombie Wolverine: The zombified version of Wolverine from the Marvel Zombies universe
- Weapon X: A feral, brainwashed Logan who just received his adamantium skeleton and claws
- Albert (and his robotic counterpart Elsie–Dee): An android version of Wolverine designed to kill Logan
- James Howlett: Wolverine’s young teenage self who just manifested his bone claws and mutant powers
The bugs (through their proxy hologram the Timebroker), promise they can fix any problems in the Wolverines’ home universes if they complete a mission for them. The alternate Logans all reluctantly agree, and the bugs send them to an alternate world where a female Magneto, Mesmero, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver all accidentally merged with another Wolverine to form the unstoppable “Brother Mutant.” Assigned to take down Brother Mutant before he can take over the world, Team Wolverine finds the situation is much more complicated… since the six Wolverines are only the latest alternate Wolverines the bugs have sent to stop Brother Mutant.
In actuality, they’ve been throwing different versions of Wolverine at Brother Mutant dozens of times. Every time, however, Brother Mutant just uses Mesmero’s powers to brainwash the dimensional doppelgangers until he now has an entire army of Wolverines. Brother Mutant even manages to take over some of the new Wolverine team, including Patch, who decapitates Zombie Wolverine.
Realizing they have no chance, the old Logan and the young James manage to make it to the bugs’ home base where they learn about the earlier team of Exiles. Realizing that, when it comes to saving universes, they’re the best there is, Logan pulls the old team out of retirement and gets them to formulate a new plan. Both teams of Exiles go after the Wolverine army — which includes a Thing-Wolverine, Hulk-Wolverine, and even a Wolverine clown (yes, really). Before the army an overwhelm them, Sabretooth throws Elsie-Dee at Brother Mutant who detonates the explosives in her android body, staggering the merged mutant. Next, Logan sacrifices himself by stabbing Brother Mutant and causing an explosion. His death infuriates James Howlet who flies into a berserker fury and finally takes out Brother Mutant for good.
In the aftermath, the surviving Wolverines all go to their home dimensions and the original Exiles are reinstated. It’s a short but fun Wolverine story which not only plays up the Canadian mutant’s star power but also reminds the reader how many versions of Wolverine there are in Marvel’s multiverse.
