The XMen Prove Theyve Defeated Their Oldest Villains For Good

Warning: spoilers ahead for Excalibur #16!

In the latest of issue of Marvel Comics’ Excalibur, another good example of the success of the mutant nation of Krakoa is revealed, proving that the greatest foes and rivals of the X-Men have been well and truly defeated due to its inception. The Brotherhood of Mutants is no more, and while some have taken active roles in guiding the new sovereign state, others have found their place on the island, as the mutant and former Brotherhood member Frederick J. Dukes – aka the Blob – displays.

Since Krakoa’s transformation into a mutant nation, one of the core tenets held by its leaders was that it would be open to any and all mutants who desired to live in peace with one another. As a result, many mutants who are now living on Krakoa were once enemies who have since become allies and even friends. Magneto is arguably the greatest example of redemption, as he himself once led the first iteration of the Brotherhood of Mutants, seeking to eliminate mankind in favor of the mutant race he sees as superior. However, even before Krakoa became a nation, Magneto has shifted his original goals as far back as 2012 when he actually joined the X-Men in favor of bettering the lives of his fellow mutants. He was a key instigator alongside Charles Xavier and Moira MacTaggert in the creation of Krakoa, and he’s since become a leader of the nation’s government known as the Quiet Council, becoming one of its greatest heroes. Additionally, the shape-shifting mutant known as Mystique is on the Council as well, and she also once led a version of the Brotherhood, now abandoned in favor of mutant peace on Krakoa.

It’s cool to see former Brotherhood leaders working and fighting for Krakoa in such a grand and important fashion, “villains” defeated with the sincere offer of peace. Even so, there are others who serve as just as great and entertaining examples of Krakoa’s success, albeit in smaller ways such as with the Blob. In the latest issue of Excalibur from Tini Howard and Marcus To, Gambit and Rogue are day drinking their sorrows away due to the perceived loss of Betsy Braddock, also known as Captain Britain. As they do, their bartender is none other than the Blob himself, who decides to join them.

Dukes was one of the X-Men’s first villains, appearing in 1964’s The X-Men #3, so the fact that he’s found his place on Krakoa is a huge symbol of how successful the idea of bringing mutants together has been. While it may not be as flashy as having a seat on the Quiet Council, it’s nice to see Fred Dukes seemingly content, running his small tiki bar on the mutant island nation. It should be noted that the Blob was a member of multiple versions of the Brotherhood, and he often carried a lot of hate for the human-passing X-Men, so it appears as though he’s genuinely found a place to experience some happiness in his life, giving a satisfying arc to an underutilized character.

Whether it’s Magneto, Mystique, Blob, or more from the Brotherhood that the X-Men have faced over the years, Krakoa has provided a means for peace and for their collective threat to be ended, seemingly for good. It not only proves the success of Krakoa as a project, but also its unique value as a result, thus demonstrating the necessity for mutantkind to protect their nation at all costs. Hopefully that shouldn’t be a problem thanks to the nation’s ability to unite so many members of the mutant population in the Marvel Universe.
