Theory SpongeBob SquarePants Is A God (Seriously)

SpongeBob SquarePants isn’t a character you would associate with Gods, let alone consider him one, but a fan theory suggests he actually is one, and it’s all based on an episode from season 1. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999, and is now one of the longest-running American animated series. SpongeBob and friends are now preparing their 13th season as well as their third feature film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of a sea sponge and his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor Squidward Tentacles, and his boss Mr. Krabs, as well as some not-so-friendly citizens of Bikini Bottom, like Plankton. SpongeBob has gone through all types of adventures and encountered some very colorful characters – case in point, in season 1 he came across with King Neptune himself when he was challenged to a cooking competition.

It was this encounter with the Roman God of the sea which made a fan realize that SpongeBob is actually a God, and he has displayed his power a couple of times throughout the series.

Why SpongeBob Is A God

A fan theory posted on Reddit suggests that SpongeBob has been a God since season 1’s episode “Neptune’s Spatula”. In it, SpongeBob was challenged to a patty-making competition against King Neptune after pulling the golden spatula out of a greasy griddle at the Fry Cooking Museum. King Neptune couldn’t believe it was SpongeBob who pulled the golden spatula so effortlessly and refused to accept it, thus challenging him. SpongeBob won the competition and King Neptune’s respect, and as previously agreed, SpongeBob could stay at Atlantis forever and become a God – but when SpongeBob realized his friends couldn’t come with him, he refused to go to Atlantis and arranged for King Neptune to be his trainee at the Krusty Krab.

But according to the theory, even though SpongeBob went back to Earth, he never gave up his divinity. The author explains there have been various examples of SpongeBob’s power ever since, beginning with how King Neptune reacted when SpongeBob told him not to use magic in the kitchen, even replying to him in a submissive tone. Another example is how SpongeBob has faced off and won against the Flying Dutchman – arguably the most feared being in Bikini Bottom – various times. SpongeBob has also proven to be able to create life, as seen in the episodes “Bubble Buddy”, where he made a bubble with a humanoid shape that turned out to be alive at the end of the story; “Frankendoodle”, where his self-portrait came to life; and “One Man’s Trash”, where he “cursed” the Soda Drink Hat that he buried next to Smitty Werben Man Jensen, making his skeleton come to life when Mr. Krabs stole the hat.

Lastly, the author explains SpongeBob has command over other characters as more than just an authority figure. A few examples of this are the episodes “Band Geeks”, where he got together a group of people that had no idea how to play their instruments and had them ready to play a professional performance in just one night; and “Patty Hype”, where he made the whole town go crazy over his Pretty Patties, which had nothing special other than weird colors. Maybe SpongeBob is now a God in disguise walking around Bikini Bottom, or he’s just a very lucky guy with a great attitude.
