The fourth season of NBC’s hit primetime drama, This Is Us, premiered in September of 2019. The season included eighteen episodes that answered questions left by the previous three seasons but also raised new issues to be answered in future years, with the show already renewed for a fifth and sixth season.

In flashbacks, fans get to dive deeper into the makings of the Pearson family, learning more about Jack and Rebecca’s relationship in the early days before they got married and had The Big Three. There are also quite a few flash-forwards, leaving fans to wonder more about what is to come.

10 Clouds (8.8)

In flashback scenes, The Big Three hand over their report cards to their parents, Jack and Rebecca. Kevin’s report card is not as good as his parents had hoped, but he insists on getting his five dollars per “A” as promised.

Kevin wants to use the money to buy baseball cards and convinces Rebecca to take him. In the present day, grown-up Kevin and Rebecca spend a near-perfect day together and visit Joni Mitchell’s old house where Rebecca shares her love of music with her son.

9 New York, New York, New York (8.8)

Kevin has a big movie premiere in New York and invites Rebecca to be his date. In an effort to “carpe diem” as much as possible after being diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s, Rebecca accepts the invitation to attend her son’s big event.

In flashbacks, Jack and Rebecca take The Big Three to New York and each person gets to pick one thing they want to do. Rebecca wants to go to a museum to see a painting, but she doesn’t get to go during the family trip. She makes up for it years later in the city with Kevin.

8 The Dinner And The Date (8.9)

Two awkward dinners play out in this episode, one in the past and one in the present. In the past, Jack invites Randall’s teacher and his wife over for dinner. Jack seems to be threatened by the mentor in his son’s life and most of the dinner conversation is snide, passive-aggressive remarks from Jack or one of his children, until Rebecca steps in.

In the present, Randall and Beth have dinner with Malik’s parents after learning that Deja and Malik have been seeing one another.

7 After The Fire (8.9)

Randall has started seeing a therapist to deal with his anxiety and some traumas, both past and present. In this episode, Randall and his therapist sort through what could have happened if Jack never died.

Randall narrates possible scenarios and how different his life may have been if his father had survived the house fire that night or if he had done something to stop his father from going back in the house to save Kate’s dog and the family photos.

6 Light And Shadows (9.0)

This episode reveals Rebecca is showing signs of early Alzheimer’s. Randall takes his mother to one of the best doctors to be evaluated. While Rebecca and Randall wait for the results, Rebecca tells Randall a story about him as a baby.

He was always the first of the three babies awake and Rebecca would rock him and listen to Joni Mitchell early in the morning. The flashback of this scene is sweet and sincere, reminding viewers just how close Randall and Rebecca’s bond is.

5 Strangers (9.1)

There are a lot of new faces in the season four premiere of This Is Us. Audiences first meet Cassidy, who seems to be a Marine serving in the Middle East. Quickly, Cassidy’s service plays out and she’s eventually discharged and welcomed back home, happily.

Things for Cassidy don’t go well once she’s back in the United States and she starts drinking. Meanwhile, viewers also meet a blind man, named Jack and see him fall in love with a waitress named Lucy. Later, it is revealed that Jack is Kate and Toby’s son.

4 Storybook Love (9.1)

The episode opens with a flashback to the day Jack and Rebecca moved into their new house and Rebecca insisted on cooking a nice meal. Of course, the meal didn’t go the way Rebecca wanted it to, but she and Jack were able to make the most of it.

In another flashback scene, when The Big Three are more grown-up and Jack has just died, Rebecca decides to make another dinner to celebrate Kevin and Sophie getting married. Again, this dinner doesn’t play out the way she wanted it to.

3 Strangers: Part 2 (9.4)

In the season finale of the fourth season, viewers get to see Dr. K again when Jack and Rebecca take The Big Three to meet their doctor on their first birthday. A sweet episode quickly turns sour when Kevin has a pretty rough day.

Madison comes to Kevin to tell him she’s pregnant and the baby is his. Right after getting this news, Kevin is confronted by Randall and the brothers exchange a lot of heated words and end up causing, what appears to be, permanent damage to their relationship.

2 So Long, Marianne (9.4)

This Thanksgiving episode isn’t as happy as some of the past Thanksgivings have been in this series. Things between Randall and Rebecca have been tense and when Randall tries to patch things up, he only makes them worse, causing Rebecca to excuse herself.

Rebecca leaves Randall’s home and quickly gets confused and confesses to a grocery clerk she feels “foggy,” furthering Randall’s suspicions that something isn’t right with his mother.

1 The Cabin (9.6)

The family cabin is the focal point of this episode. Teenage Kate and her new boyfriend, Marc, decide to go to the cabin for a little getaway, but Rebecca is uneasy about the trip and about Marc.

Rebecca’s motherly instincts are correct and she gathers Kevin and Randall to go to the cabin to rescue Kate from a really bad situation. In the present, The Big Three meet at the family cabin to dig up the time capsule their father made them bury years before.
