This Is Us Why Randall Has Such A Bad Hero Complex

This is Us reveals more about Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) struggle in dealing with Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) illness, including a better understanding of why he has such bad hero complex. NBC’s family drama released its penultimate episode for season 4 this week titled “After the Fire” and it continues to dwell on Randall’s issues. His latest therapy session with Dr. Leigh (Pamela Adlon) uncovered some of his worst fears, which explain some of the atrocious behavior audiences have seen from him recently.

Due to Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) insistence, Randall is finally going to therapy where he gets to unpack years of unspoken issues that have been plaguing him. One particular problem that they zeroed in on stems from his previous conversation with Kevin (Justin Hartley) about dwelling on the idea of how their lives would’ve turned out if Jack lived (Milo Ventimiglia). As with every episode of This Is Us, the show took on a non-linear approach when it came to their storytelling, but this time, there was a twist. Randall imagined the possible ways his life would’ve turned out if his father survived the fire. There were two scenarios – one where everything turned out okay for him, which included meeting Beth and William (Ron Cephas Jones) whom he was able to save from his terminal stomach cancer due to early detection; the second laid out his worst fears. Throughout all of this, viewers finally have a good idea of why Randall has been hell bent on saving people, especially his parents; sometimes it’s caused him to have questionable decisions and actions.

As he told Kevin in last week’s episode of This Is Us, Randall continues to be haunted by the possibility that he could’ve saved Jack from dying – whether that would’ve been stopping him from going back into the house for the dog or being in the hospital with Rebecca when he died. The whole idea has paralyzed him, especially with regard to dealing with Rebecca’s cognitive decline. Burdened by his guilt over Jack’s death (which was in no way his fault), he’s so focused on saving Rebecca as well – to the point that he’s already making terrible choices such as emotionally manipulating her into entering a clinical trial, despite her previously refusing to do so. Randall acknowledges that Jack’s death remains a big regret, and he’s anticipating that him being unable to save Rebecca will be much worse than the guilt he now feels for the death of his father.

This whole situation highlights Randall’s savior complex, but why does he even have this in the first place and why does it seem to be aggravated when it involves his parents? The reason is, Randall wanted to save Jack and now Rebecca so badly because he feels the strong need to return the favor to them for saving him. The Pearsons provided him with everything he needed – a loving family and decent life until tragedy struck them with Jack’s death. The urge to finally do this is so much stronger due to a couple of reasons; first, he has a special bond with Rebecca, caring for her became the only consistent thing in his life since Jack died, and as someone with anxiety, this responsibility serves as his anchor. Second, he already failed in saving Jack (William, too), so for him, this is his final chance to prove that they did the right thing in adopting him.

Sadly, despite Randall’s best intentions, his misguided actions will more likely end up causing a rift between him and Kevin. Both knew that Rebecca didn’t want to do that clinical trial so Number One will obviously be suspicious why there’s a sudden change in her decision. As the brothers’ brewing argument continues to boil, their full-blown fight is expected to finally come to fruition in the upcoming This is Us season 4 finale.
