Thor & Galactus Are Fighting To Save the Universe

In search of resources from the core of living worlds to amplify the power cosmic, Thor the Herald of Thunder is in a race agains time… and the insatiable hunger of Galactus in “The Devourer King” story arc from Donny Cates and Nic Klein. As the Black Winter permeates the cosmos, enveloping all light, gods and monsters are the last defense for life itself in Marvel Comics’ Thor.

When a crippled Galactus falls from the depths of space and into the Realm Eternal, the newly-crowned King of Asgard, All-Father Thor learns of a terrible doom that has slipped through folds in the multiverse, a void-like wave of annihilation with a hunger of its own. The Black Winter, an imperishable force which destroyed Galactus’ own universe, is emerging to engulf the realms the All-Father has sworn to protect and only a pact with Galactus the world-eater will offer hope from the coming oblivion. Much as the terrifying Galactus is a reaver of planets, the perplexing entity is also essential to the cycle of life and decay that governs reality, and a reluctant Thor becomes the Herald of Thunder, as the god-king and the Scourge of Worlds unite to defend against the onslaught of the star plague.

“The Devourer King” story arc in Thor foretells the withering of Yggdrasil, the World-Tree “as the Black Winter blankets the heavens in search of our reality … devouring light and life and flowing only toward endless nothing.” Only by augmenting the power cosmic in Galactus with rare and unique elements harvested from a handful of planets can the Herald of Thunder and an empowered Galactus hope to prevent the end of all life. Yet, Galactus’ hunger is an ungovernable compulsion and even the might of the god-king, Thor is not enough to restrain the Devourer — and entire worlds have paid the price for the All-Father’s failure. In Thor 4, “The Void,” the anguished Herald-Thor pledges to the irrepressible Galactus that “when the Winter is clear, you will answer for the people of Kyro. And for all the lives you have stolen before it.”

The All-Father’s decree to lend his divine might to the destructive impulses of the World-Devourer has not gone unchallenged and, to the Thunderer’s dismay, the hammer-wielding Beta Ray Bill has sought to exact his own revenge on Galactus. Even in Asgard, the cosmic alliance is not without its detractors with Lady Sif lending her sword to Bill’s cause, and an interstellar refugee camp under the boughs of the World-Tree is taxing the bounty of Asgard. As the Black Winter seeps into the universe and the faltering coalition to stop its expansion threatens to collapse, the prophesied ruin to come promises to be “the one true end of us all,” in the latest Thor, “The Devourer King.”
