Thor Love & Thunder Is Too Late To Fix The MCUs Asgard Mistakes

The first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe created a problem for Asgard that is too late to fix in Thor: Love and Thunder. The planet Thor once called home was destroyed by his sister Hela at the end of Thor: Ragnarok. The Asgardians who were able to escape Hela’s attack ended up on a ship that was subsequently boarded by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, who killed many more. This left the small group of survivors to settle on Earth in New Asgard.

However, the MCU never allowed Asgard or its vibrant mythology to flourish. It was treated as a second-class citizen to Earth, neglected and overlooked despite the fact that Thor, the God of Thunder and an Avenger, was responsible for its people. The majority of 2011’s Thor ignored Asgard’s existence, with the titular character having been banished to Earth for most of the film and stripped of Mjolnir, his mighty hammer.

That’s where the mistakes regarding Asgard and its importance truly began. While Thor: The Dark World delved into some of Asgard’s mythology, the sequel was more focused on the villainous Dark Elves, who were interested in destroying the Nine Realms altogether. It’s in this film that Asgard could have been grounded by more positive Asgardian lore. Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok saw the God of Thunder imprisoned on the planet Sakaar, and Asgard only factored into the story long enough to be destroyed entirely by the end.

In Marvel Comics, Asgard was adapted from Norse mythology, where it stands as the home of the gods. While the Norse legend splits Asgard into 12 different realms, Marvel’s version of the location is one of Nine Realms, and its mythology plays a much bigger role in the lives of Thor and the galaxy at large. But, despite the superheroes galivanting throughout space, the MCU has been fairly limited in its exploration of other planets besides Earth. That’s understandable considering it’s familiar territory, and there is no CGI needed to imagine what it would look like when compared with a fictional planet like Asgard.

Now that the Asgardians have made a new home for themselves on Earth, any potential for the planet and all the fantastic storytelling and characters that could have been explored while it existed are extinguished. There’s no telling what’s in store for the God of Thunder in Thor: Love and Thunder, but the damage to Asgard has been done and it’s something the fourth film can’t fix no matter what the plot of the movie turns out to be. What’s more, with the return of Jane Foster and her becoming the superhero Mighty Thor, the movie might be grounded to Earth even more so than ever.

Sure, Thor: Love and Thunder could venture to other planets in the now-Eight Realms, but the MCU missed an opportunity to deeply explore Asgard’s rich history, its lore, and its diverse peoples. All that said, there’s still a sliver of hope since the Avengers went time-hopping in Avengers: Endgame. With the MCU opening itself up to the multiverse and potentially alternate timelines and dimensions in Phase 4, there’s a chance fans could see Asgard once more, even if it’s just an alternate version of its original glory.
