Thors Hammer Mjolnir Is About To Become Asgards Biggest Threat

Spoilers for Thor #14 by Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson, and Joe Sabino!

Mjolnir, the most iconic symbol of Asgardian might and of Thor himself, is about to be turned against the God of Thunder’s kingdom. King in Black writer Donny Cates has mercilessly bullied Thor since taking over his comic. After facing the wrath of Galactus, Knull, and even his unhinged and all-powerful former alter-ego, Thor is in dire need of some R&R. The poor God’s hammer isn’t even working right.

That’s right, one of the biggest developments of Cates’ run has involved a major malfunction on Mjolnir’s part. For whatever reason, anyone can lift the hammer, while Thor has had an increasingly difficult time using it. It’s an effect that has been used across various comics; Loki has picked it up and it even had a surprising use in the finale of King in Black. Now, in the conclusion of the Prey story arc, Mjolnir gets its most dangerous user.

Donald Blake has been waging war on Asgard lately. Since returning from a hellish reality created for him by Odin under the World Tree, Blake has brought down a terrible vengeance upon Thor and his people. In an exclusive preview for Thor #14 from CBR, Blake is shown wielding Mjolnir against Loki, Odin, and the Destroyer Armor-clad soul of Thor. Blake has already been absolutely dominating everything thrown at him – apart from the unstoppable force that is Throg – so now seeing him pull out one of the most powerful weapons in Marvel comics is a terrifying sight.

It’s unclear if Blake is able to lift the weapon because of its malfunctioning enchantment or if he is naturally able to because of his connection to Thor. Readers have seen the effects losing Mjolnir has had on Thor, but seeing him have to fight his beloved hammer is another story entirely. He’s having a bad enough time as it is, with his soul being disconnected from his body and his entire kingdom being under siege, now Thor will have to face off against his most trusted and signature weapon.

Mjolnir being turned against Asgard is a cruel twist of fate. Cates’ series begins with Thor literally throwing the hammer across the 9 realms to let everyone know that there’s a new king in town. The malfunctioning hammer is the ultimate symbol of Asgardian rule, and now king and kingdom, all the same, are feeling its wrath.
