Thors Mom Is A Total Badass (Even If She Isnt His Birth Mother)

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Thor #17

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Thor, the God of Thunder’s mother proves she’s always been a badass with an all-new look and title, becoming the God of the Hunt. While she might not be Thor’s birth mother, Freyja meets with her son and ex-husband Odin in this new issue after saving them from monstrous creatures from the fiery realm of Muspelheim. She also speaks with Thor, as there’s been some recent confusion as to who the God of Thunder’s biological mother really is, with the Phoenix’s claim that she’s Thor’s mother.

In Thor #17 from writer Donny Cates and guest artist Michele Bandini, Thor and Odin have been summoned to Vanheim by Freyja and the God of Thunder’s sister Angela, and Freyja’s rocking a new style. Looking like a warrior ready for battle and wielding a massive sword, Freyja saves Thor and Odin from a horde of Koragants, an invasive species from Muspelheim that were brought to Vanaheim during The War of the Realms. Accompanying her new look, Freyja came in mounted on her massive battle cat Trjegul with dual miniguns strapped to either side. As if that wasn’t cool enough, the aftermath of the battle saw Freyja informing her ex-husband Odin that she is no longer the Goddess of Fertility and Marriage. After she and Odin parted ways, she decided to join Angela and become the God of the Hunt.

While Freyja had some choice words she’d been saving for Odin, her ultimate goal was to knock some sense into the All-Father and Thor. As the new King of Asgard, it’s no secret that Thor has been struggling with his rule and could use some guidance. But besides that, Freyja also speaks with Thor alone, and she acknowledges that she’s not his birth mother. While Marvel’s Empyre saw Thor wielding the powers of the goddess Gaea, which implied that she was his actual mother, the Phoenix recently claimed to be Thor’s birth mother as well in the pages of Jason Aaron’s Avengers. That being said, while Freyja might not be Thor’s birth mother, she is the only mother who raised him.

As if being Thor’s chosen mother and becoming the new God of the Hunt didn’t make her enough of a badass, Freyja also provides some much-needed council to the God of Thunder. Thor intends to be Asgard’s final king, refusing to have any heirs to inherit the throne after the vision he received from the Black Winter. Fearing the coming of Thanos the Mad Titan, Thor’s reign has been understandably challenging, especially due to the problems he’s been having with his hammer Mjolnir. However, Freyja encourages him that whatever threats lie ahead, Thor won’t face them alone. No matter how many times the world has nearly ended, they’ve figured out how to defend and protect it all the same.

All in all, Freyja’s new chapter in the Marvel Universe is certainly an exciting one, highlighting how much of a badass and formidable warrior she’s always been. No longer the wife of Odin, it seems as though Freyja intends to truly shine as her own Norse god, fighting, hunting, and righting wrongs alongside Thor’s sister Angela. Here’s hoping her new look and title will stick around for the long term in the pages of Thor.
