Thors New Avengers Infinity War Weapon Confirmed

Fans were shocked when Mjolnir was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok, but now the hero’s new weapon has been revealed for Avengers: Infinity War – the axe, Stormbreaker. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has carried Mjolnir since his first appearance in Thor in 2011, a movie that centered on the mystical hammer as the Asgardian fought to earn the right to wield it again. Since then, Mjolnir has been seen in multiple movies as an incredibly powerful weapon of the Marvel universe… but it was destroyed in the latest Thor solo outing; Ragnarok.

Thor: Ragnarok began with the destruction of the hammer (and a whole lot more), as Hela (Cate Blanchett) returned to Asgard to take the throne – and there could be little better example of her extreme power than her ability to crush Mjolnir with her bare hands. For the rest of Ragnarok, Thor used whatever weaponry was at hand, but it has been confirmed that Avengers: Infinity War will see Thor with a new dedicated weapon – and now the name of that weapon has been confirmed.

EW posted a behind-the scenes description of Infinity War today, describing the filming of a battle that takes place near Wakanda (the same battle, presumably, that has been shown in images and footage from the film already). The description includes a line about Thor’s latest weapon, and names it as Stormbreaker:

…while Thor swings a mystical ax known as Stormbreaker, a supersized upgrade from his demolished hammer, Mjolnir.

This isn’t the first that has been heard of Thor’s new weapon, of course. In recent weeks, sneak peeks at toy lines for Avengers: Infinity War have included a look at Spider-Man’s new suit, and at Thor’s new axe. A look at the packaging for the Stormbreaker toy (h/t Digital Spy) also shows the name, as well as a good look at the shape of the weapon, which has an axe-head on one side, and a hammer on the other.

Stormbreaker also exists in Marvel comics, as a copy of Mjolnir itself, forged by the Dwarves of Nidavellir and enchanted by Odin for Beta Ray Bill. It is similar in many ways to Mjolnir itself, and can also only be weilded by those who are worthy, but it does have more of an axe-like appearance at times in the comics. The choice to give Thor Stormbreaker is an interesting one, and may surprise the fans who were hoping to see another comic weapon of Thor’s, Jarnbjorn. Jarnbjorn is another Dwarven-made battle axe that Thor has used in the past, but which does not have the ‘worthiness requirement’ of Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. Of course, it’s likely that the MCU will put their own spin on the history of this comic book weapon, and that we’ll see exactly how Thor gets his hands on it only when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters.
