Tiger King: 10 Carol Baskin Facts The Show Left Out

Joe Exotic may be the focal point of Netflix’s Tiger King miniseries, but special attention should be paid to his rival, Carol Baskin.

Since its release on Netflix, the documentary Tiger King has gone on to become one of the most popular television series currently airing in America. That is, in part, because of the titular Tiger King, but an equally strong draw has been the strange character of Carole Baskin, the Tiger King’s nemesis and an avowed opponent to private big cat ownership in the United States.

While the show gave us some information about her background, there’s a great deal that it leaves out.

10 She Once Ran A B&B At Her Rescue

One of the more controversial aspects of Carole’s persona is her ownership of what she has termed a big cat sanctuary which, to some people, doesn’t look all that different from the types of roadside zoos to which she is so adamantly opposed. It certainly doesn’t help that she once used her operation as a bed and breakfast at one point, though, in her defense, keeping big cats is an expensive business, and every bit of money helps.

9 She Started By Rescuing Bobcats When She Was 17

Though the documentary does allude to the fact that Baskin has a long history of “rescuing” big cats, what it doesn’t make clear is that she started doing it when she was a mere 17 years old! Clearly, her fascination with cats has deep roots, though one can’t help but wonder whether any 17-year-old really has what it takes to adequately care for wild animals that have very specific and demanding dietary and other needs.

8 She Once Had a Llama Lawn Business

Carole’s love of wild animals goes beyond cats, however. At one point, she even had a business that used llamas to trim lawns. While this might sound crazy to some, it’s not as far out there as you might think.

In fact, many people have been known to use various types of poultry—including ducks and chickens—for various aspects of lawn care, so, why not branch out and use llamas, as well?

7 She’s Reveiced Animal Welfare Violations In the Past

Again, a lot of people have pointed out that it’s a bit hypocritical for Carole to take such umbrage at the ways in which big cat owners care for their own animals when her own sanctuary has come under some scrutiny and criticism for its own standards of care, and not just from the likes of Joe Exotic. These citations make you wonder whether her decision to call her location a sanctuary was truly as altruistic as it sounds, or whether

6 She Recently Won An Award For Her Work

Though she’s come in for her fair share of criticism in terms of how she’s handled the care of the big cats in her care, it’s only fair to point out that there are many who have also celebrated Baskin’s stewardship. In fact, she was given an award by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Baskin has also done a lot of work lobbying Congress in an attempt to outlaw the private ownership of big cats.

5 She’s Actually Hugely Popular On Social Media

The series allows us to see that Carole is very, very active on social media—she even has her own catchphrase: “hey, all you cool cats and kittens!” What you may not realize is just how popular she is on various platforms. Big Cat Rescue, which Baskin owns and runs, has over 2.5 million likes and 2.7 million follows. Even more significantly, its YouTube channel has over 1 million subscribers. Those figures testify that, whatever you think of her, Carole Baskin has an enormous following.

4 She’s Feuding With the Filmmakers

While a lot of people love Tiger King for a lot of reasons, Carole Baskin is not one of those people. She has been very public and open about the fact that she doesn’t approve of the way that the show decided to portray her and that she feels misled by the filmmakers.

One can’t really blame her for feeling that way given that the series devotes almost an entire episode to exploring the circumstantial evidence that she might have had a part in her first husband’s unexplained disappearance.

3 She’s Had Multiple Restraining Orders Against Her

One of the pieces of circumstantial evidence that the series sites regarding Carole’s first husband’s disappearance is that he had taken out a restraining order against her. While hardly conclusive, of course, it definitely suggests that there was a great deal of tension between the two of them.

More ominous, perhaps, is the fact that her next boyfriend also had a restraining order against her. Again, it’s nothing conclusive or condemnatory, but it does suggest that Carole isn’t quite the squeaky-clean person that she likes to project.

2 Her Missing Husband Resembled Doc Antle In Some Ways

One of the most flamboyant personalities to appear in Tiger King is one Doc Antle, a man who owns an animal park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. With his signature hairstyle, his penchant for mysticism, and his “collection” of attractive young women, he’s definitely one of the more problematic characters to appear.

1 The Sheriff Reopened the Case

While the series made it seem as if most of the debate surrounding the disappearance of Carole’s first husband Don Lewis might have subsided years ago, in fact, the sheriff has decided to reopen the case. This isn’t the first time that the viral popularity of a true-crime series has led to a sea-change in how the public perceives a case; the famous podcast Serial did that to Adnan Syed. It remains to be seen how this will affect Carole’s life.
