Users are claiming that Titanfall 2 has been compromised by hackers, putting players’ consoles and PCs at danger from exploits and malicious codes. While there has been no official confirmation of this, the franchise does have a history with hackers. In July, Apex Legends was hacked by players who used the battle royale to spread a concerned message about the fate of the first Titanfall game, which they claimed was rife with hackers of its own.

The troubling state of the Titanfall franchise has been attributed at least in part to its developer, Respawn Interactive. In 2019 the company released Apex Legends a free to play battle royale which saw considerable success thanks to its use of distinct heroes, as seen in other popular multiplayer shooters like Overwatch. As Apex Legends grew more popular, Respawn devoted more and more time and resources to it, and consequently, less effort was spent on Titanfall and its sequel. In fact, not long after the aforementioned Apex Legends hack, Respawn Community Director Jason Garza revealed that Titanfall only has one or two people working on it.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the Titanfall franchise is defunct, or that this hack wouldn’t be incredibly dangerous if true. As reported by DualShockers, a warning about the hack appeared in a Discord chat before eventually being sent out by Twitter account Titanfall Forever. The claims made in the warning are serious; players are urged not only to refrain from playing the game, but to uninstall it entirely, lest hackers use the admin panel to gain access to whatever system the game is being played on. There does not appear to be a source for this warning, but Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that it is aware of the reports and is currently investigating. Pending the results of this investigation, many fans consider the reports to be little more than a hoax.

We are aware of reports of a security vulnerability affecting Titanfall 2 and are investigating. We have no other information to share at the moment but will update once we do.

It’s easy to dismiss the claims made by this Discord warning, but the fact remains that multiplayer games across the industry remain vulnerable to hackers. The Call of Duty franchise, for instance, is so rife with hackers that Activision is debuting a new form of anti-cheat software for Warzone and the upcoming Vanguard. Time will tell if this new technology will help remedy Warzone’s prolific cheater problem, which has regularly caused ban waves targeting thousands of accounts at a time. While the security vulnerability allegedly affecting Titanfall 2 is a bit more dire than aimbots and invincibility hacks, both speak to a pervasive problem throughout the online gaming community.

It remains to be seen what will become of Respawn’s investigation and the fate of the community who still enjoys Titanfall 2 five years after its initial release. Even though it doesn’t appear to be the highest priority at Respawn, the game is still alive, and earlier this year Titanfall 2 broke its own concurrent player record after a highly successful free weekend. The players that joined on during that time likely don’t want to see the game shut down by hackers, be they fraudulent or not.
