Titans Red Hood Suit Is Perfect (But Not Comic Accurate)

The Red Hood suit in Titans season 3 is practically prefect, but there are a few hiccups with the design. Titans season 3 will see Jason Todd ditch the Robin mantle as he takes on the second canonical identity that he is most known as, after first being the second Robin. Ahead of Titans season 3 commencing production, showrunner Greg Walker revealed that as Jason becomes Red Hood, he will use his new title to go after his former team. This is a major deal for the Bat-Family character as Red Hood has never been seen in live-action until now.

Red Hood’s most well-received interpretation in media was in the DC animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood with Jensen Ackles lending his voice for the anti-hero. Titans have been known for bringing some of the heroes and villains costume to life incredibly well. With costume designer Laura Jean Shannon involved, many super-suits have made it from panel to screen. Whether it’s the Robin costumes, Wonder Girl, Hawk, Dove, or the Nightwing armor, Shannon’s work has been incredibly well-received, as it should. For Jason’s major suit upgrade, it’s a fairly solid adaptation of the iconic look that he sports in the comics.

However, as perfect as the live-action costume is, there are a few elements that didn’t translate as well from the comics as hoped. Despite translating Jason’s red helmet with grace from panel to screen, the addition of the white eyes has its ups and downs. While it’s a nice touch for a live-action DC property to include those classic white eyes, something that isn’t seen often, it may have gone a little too far. In the comics, the eyes aren’t as huge as they have made it for the Titans incarnation. Unless it actually moves with Jason’s facial expressions, similarly to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man mask in the MCU, it’ll look slightly bizarre when seeing the helmet in action with that size of white eyes.

The addition of the red hoodie is very similar to Batman: Arkham Knight’s Red Hood after Jason took on that title. What purpose it serves for Titans’ Jason as part of his gear-up is unknown at this point, but more importantly, is it even needed? Even if it looks natural in the comics, it’s highly unlikely to be practical for Red Hood when he’s fighting with not one, but two clothing pieces over his armor. In the case of the leather jacket, while several incarnations of Red Hood have gone with long-traditional sleeves, recent versions have moved away from it. Jason’s arms are normally never fully covered by his bodysuit or jacket, which probably helps him when wielding weapons like guns.

Jason Todd has never been afraid to leave bits and pieces of himself vulnerable, likely because of his formidable fighting and weapon-wielding abilities. It’s always possible that this look that was unveiled will evolve bit by bit throughout Titans season 3. After all, Jason will be relatively new in his role as Red Hood which allows for experimentations. It’s been a long wait to see the anti-hero in live-action after all these years which is why Titans will have a big responsibility with the DC icon. With a few elements not having translated as well to live-action, the Red Hood costume is, overall, a masterpiece. It’s a huge relief that they didn’t go with Red Hood’s current look in the comics, which was a massive downgrade for the character. All that remains now is to finally see some footage of Red Hood in Titans season 3.
