To All The Boys 3 Lana Condor Deserves Bigger Roles (Like Noah Centineo)

To All the Boys: Always and Forever proves that Lana Condor deserves bigger mainstream roles. Not only does the third franchise movie highlight her obvious charisma, but also shows that she’s one of the industry’s most promising young actresses. Just as co-star Noah Centineo has landed coveted spots in Masters of the Universe and Black Adam, Condor should similarly be headlining high-profile feature films across various genres.

Condor has indeed appeared in numerous blockbusters already – such as X-Men: Apocalypse, Patriots Day, and Alita: Battle Angel – but she’s now in a position to evolve as an actress. In the To All the Boys franchise, she’s been tasked with channeling the naivete and emotional insecurities of a teenage girl, whose level of confidence heavily contrasts with that of other characters. For example, Centineo shines in his starring role as Peter, and shows depth when exploring his character’s familial issues, but he mostly communicates all the traits of a typical Homecoming King. And because Centineo succeeds, casting agents have unsurprisingly targeted him for roles that might’ve once gone to Chris Evans or Chris Pratt. As for Condor, her franchise character arc has been more dramatic, evidenced by Lara Jean’s evolution from the first movie to the closing minutes of To All the Boys 3.

The entire To All the Boys franchise relies on Condor’s range as a performer. She captures all the mannerisms of a 16-year-old character, but it’s the little things that can be easily overlooked. For every curled-lip moment that conveys nervous energy, there’s are several moments where Condor’s eyes or vocal patterns allow for more character depth. Lara Jean’s behavior becomes more animated in To All the Boys 2, simply because she’s grown up and doesn’t quite know how to handle her feelings for both Peter and John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher). But aside from all the character traits that make the character so endearing and captivating, it’s Condor’s ability to communicate Lara Jean’s perspective that creates special moments. Wisely, the actress uses the Awkward Teenager playbook as a template, which informs the audience of core personality traits, but then makes the character her own when not paired with Centineo.

Because Condor and Centineo are so charming as Lara Jean and Peter in To All the Boys 3, audiences might pay more attention to the character dynamics rather than the intricacies of the performances. Some of the pop culture-themed dialogue doesn’t particularly suit Condor well, as Lara Jean’s musings about magical on-screen romances make the character seem too young and naive. For storytelling purposes, however, such moments set-up up the grand reveal, in which Lara Jean breaks free from her imagination and tackles life head-on. So, Condor has much more to offer with Lara Jean. If To All the Boys 4 does happen, she can leave behind the character’s innocence and focus on her hopes and fears as a young woman at NYU. When considering Condor’s obvious talent, there’s potential for a classic genre performance in the near future, especially if the fourth franchise movie is more of a dramatic character study than a traditional romantic comedy.

Moving forward, Condor’s X factor may be that she’s not a comedy-first actress but rather a strong dramatic performer who can sell comedy. In fact, it’s Kitty (Anna Cathcart ) who provides the most humor in the To All the Boys franchise, which suggests that she could potentially carry a future film on her own. As for Condor, she’s currently attached to the science fiction film Moonshot and the comedy Girls Night, which will figuratively allow her to wear the Greek masks of both tragedy and comedy. But which big-name director will cast Condor in a career-changing role? After Chloé Zhao wraps up Eternals, it would be thrilling to see the Chinese filmmaker return to her storytelling roots and team up with an Asian-American actress like Condor for a slow-burn drama. It’s not hard to imagine the To All the Boys star earning a few Oscar nominations when it’s all said and done.
