Legendary film star Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have been diagnosed with coronavirus – but what does that mean for Hollywood? The World Health Organisation has officially confirmed the coronavirus disease is a global pandemic. A globalized world is uniquely vulnerable to the spread of such a virus, and right now governments are scrambling to respond. Countries like China and Italy have imposed draconian measures, and other European nations are following suit. It was only a matter of time before one of Hollywood’s A-listers was struck by coronavirus; film production involves a massive team, and the stars spend time with almost every member of the crew. Sadly, last night the news broke that legendary film star Tom Hanks has indeed been diagnosed with coronavirus.
Actor Tom Hanks took to social media to announce both he and his wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for coronavirus while shooting an Elvis Presley biopic in Australia. Both are aged 63, and Hanks is in a higher-risk category because he has previously been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes; he’s likely to experience more severe symptoms as a result. Still, Hanks sounds upbeat, and he used his official statement as a reminder to his countless fans to follow the advice of medical experts. As he explained it:
“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.
Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?
We’ll keep the world posted and updated.”
Chet and Colin Hanks have both used social media to reassure everyone their parents are fine. “I just got off the phone with them,” Chet explained in an Instagram post. “They both are fine. They’re not even that sick. They’re not worried about it. They’re not trippin’ but they’re going through the necessary health precautions obviously. I don’t think it’s anything to be too worried about. I appreciate everyone’s concern and the well wishes. I think it’s all going to be alright. I appreciate it. Everybody stay safe out there.” Colin stressed the same points on Twitter, complimenting the Australian doctors for the quality of their care and asserting his confidence they would make a full recovery.
Officials from Queensland Health told The Hollywood Reporter Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are believed to have contracted coronavirus in the United States. Although the official didn’t specifically name Hanks and Wilson, he noted all new reported infections were non-contact cases, and patients seem to have “contracted the illness outside Australia and traveled to Queensland with the virus.” It’s a disturbing reminder the film industry could serve as a dangerous vector for coronavirus, with cast and crew traveling the globe during production.
Principal photography on the as-yet-unnamed Elvis Presley biopic was due to start on Monday, but has understandably been postponed. Warner Bros. has sent everybody home, and Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk publicly asked anyone who has come into close contact with Hanks and Wilson to go into self-imposed quarantine. Oddly enough, this could prove more problematic for Wilson rather than her husband; she sang at the Sydney Opera House over the weekend, and the Opera House is working with the authorities to contact over 200 people who could have been exposed to the virus. Wilson was also a guest on Channel 9’s talk show Today Extra, and the hosts and crew are now under quarantine. While Hanks is known for his personable character and willingness to interact with fans, authorities don’t believe anyone who got an autograph is at risk, as they won’t have had sustained contact with the actor for over 15 minutes.
Coronavirus is having a massive impact on the film industry, and as noted it was inevitable one of Hollywood’s stars would eventually be diagnosed with the disease. For all that’s the case, though, it is more disturbing for Tom Hanks to be the first prominent Hollywood diagnosis; he’s widely considered one of the best-natured actors in the business, and this will have shaken a lot of his colleagues to their core. Warner Bros. will no doubt be attempting to figure out where exactly Hanks contracted coronavirus, concerned he may have been infected by someone else in the studio.
Meanwhile, this serves to underscore Hollywood’s particular vulnerability to coronavirus. The production of any movie involves a significant number of people, working everything from cameras to lighting, from set design to costumes; as a biopic, Hanks’ film will have had a smaller crew than many movies, but blockbusters being filmed in Australia right now will have crews numbering in the hundreds. The more people are involved, the more vulnerable a production becomes. Location shoots may involve traveling through areas of potential exposure to coronavirus, and indoor studios won’t necessarily be a good alternative; stuffy, poorly-ventilated environments may be more conducive to spreading the virus in the first place. It seems inevitable that other stars are going to come down with coronavirus, and that Hanks’ Elvis Presley film is just the first delayed in this way.
This is, however, most likely a key moment in the coronavirus epidemic. “Ok, now we all have someone we love diagnosed with coronavirus,” wrote journalist Ann Curry on Twitter, correctly noting the virus has suddenly taken on a very personal dimension to everyone who loves a Tom Hanks film. It’s easy to mock, but something on the scale of coronavirus only becomes real to people when it affects someone they feel they know; and for millions of Americans, Tom Hanks – the very definition of an “Everyman” actor – fits that definition.
