Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Venom: Let There Be Carnage star, Tom Hardy reacts to Jacob Batalon’s outfit at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, which appeared to be a nod to Woody Harrelson’s character, Cletus Kasady. Hardy returned to the big screen earlier this year as Eddie Brock in the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Venom. The film saw Eddie grapple with his new life as host to an alien symbiote, with the pair ultimately having to put their differences aside to take down serial killer Cletus Kasady after he too joined forces with an all-powerful symbiote, named Carnage.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is part of Sony’s newly dubbed Sony Spider-Man Universe, which doesn’t actually include the Spider-Man films themselves (although Sony are also behind them) but rather Sony’s growing collection of films that are centered on some of Spider-Man’s more iconic villains, such as Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. The end credit scene for Venom: Let There Be Carnage confirmed many fans suspicions that the two universes would eventually reference one another as a shift in Eddie’s reality gave him a glimpse of J. Jonah Jameson’s broadcast about Spider-Man’s unmasking from the final moments of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Venom and Eddie then also featured in Spider-Man: No Way Home’s end credit scene, which actually saw Eddie return to his original universe, but not before leaving behind a tiny remnant of the symbiote.

Now, while attending the premiere for No Way Home, Batalon, who plays Peter Parker’s best friend, Ned, had a particularly interesting outfit choice that appeared to reference this exciting crossover. Taking to Instagram, Hardy shared the red-carpet image of Batalon, looking incredibly suave and rocking a bright red Hawaiian shirt that is near-identical to one worn by Cletus Kasady in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Hardy captioned the image “Congratulations NWH” followed by a handful of emojis, before adding “Cletus Shirt nod” with the suspicious eyes emoji. Check out Hardy’s post below.

Batalon was not the only one of the film’s stars to make a fun reference with their outfit as his co-star Zendaya attended the event in a stunning gown that was covered in webs, obviously referencing Parker’s web-shooting abilities. Hardy’s congratulations come after it was revealed that Spider-Man: No Way Home had the second-biggest opening day of all time. The highly anticipated threequel from director Jon Watts earned $121.5 million at the box office, coming second to one of its predecessors Avengers: Endgame that scored an epic $157.4 million back in 2019.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home appeared to confirm that Brock and Venom will not be making the multi-versal leap over to the MCU after all, it has certainly left the door wide open for a cross-over of some capacity in the future. Many fans were left reeling from the end-credit sequence, as they began to speculate just who within the Marvel Universe will play host to the symbiote that Brock left behind at the bar. All that to say, Batalon’s nod to Marvel’s adjacent film series is certainly a fun reference for fans of both franchises, and who knows what could be in store in the future following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
