Tom Hardy’s fan-favorite character Alfie Solomons is returning to Peaky Blinders for season 6, as revealed in a new teaser. The BBC’s historical drama, which first aired in 2013, follows the post-WW1 emergence of the Shelbys, a Birmingham crime family based on the real-life razor hat-toting gangs of the 1920s. The hit series, which stars Cillian Murphy as dark antihero Tommy Shelby, has become more and more popular over its meteoric five-season run, bringing wool suits and flat-caps back into fashion around the UK and the world.

One of the biggest stars featured in the series is Hollywood leading man Tom Hardy, who joined the crime drama in Peaky Blinders season 2 as rival Jewish gang-leader Alfie Solomons. Hardy stole the show every time he appeared during seasons 2, 3 and 4, with his treacherous and fickle relationship with the Shelbys reaching a boiling point in the season 4 finale. Having seemingly been killed off in that same episode, Hardy’s presence was still very much felt, and it wasn’t long before fans speculated he could still be lurking in the shadows. The most recent finale in 2019 with Peaky Blinders season 5, episode 6, “Mr Jones,” revealed Hardy’s Solomons was alive and hiding in Margate, though his face was scarred and an eye was missing as a result of being shot in the face.

Now, as hype builds for Peaky Blinders season 6, BBC iPlayer has revealed a new teaser on Instagram, showing Hardy’s highly-anticipated return. In the 10-second clip, Tommy is seen visiting the original distillery owned by Alfie in the show’s early seasons. Emerging from the dark, Hardy’s character is told by Tommy “Alfie. I think I may have written your final act.” The dialogue implies Tommy is bringing Alfie out of his exile for one last favor. The video, captioned “He’s back,” promises that Peaky Blinders season 6 will begin streaming on BBC iPlayer in early 2022. Check out the new teaser below:

The long-awaited season 6 is set to be the show’s last, but creator Steven Knight confirmed earlier this year that a Peaky Blinders movie will bring the story to a close on the big screen. With the sad passing of Polly Shelby actress Helen McCrory in early 2021, the new season has to also find a way of giving her character a satisfying and respectful conclusion, though it is currently unknown whether McCrory filmed any new material for the upcoming episodes. Peaky Blinders season 5 ended with Tommy’s botched assassination attempt on fascist political leader Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin), with the story set to continue into this new series.

Not much else is known about the plot of the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders season 6, but the teaser confirms that Alfie is back, and Tommy is calling on his help once more. As well as Hardy, the majority of the Peaky Blinders mainstay cast are returning, including Claflin’s villainous Mosley. Newcomers joining season 6 include 21 year-old BAFTA rising star nominee Conrad Khan, Black 47’s James Frecheville and Liverpudlian character actor Stephen Graham, whose UK drama roots in shows such as This Is England have been matched with recent Hollywood success in films including The Irishman and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. As for what Tommy has planned for Alfie in Peaky Blinders season 6, it will undoubtedly be in aid of another attempt to take Mosley down for good.
