Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland revealed that if he wants to drink while in costume, he needs to run a tube through the eye sockets of the mask. No Way Home, which comes to theaters on December 17, is the fourth film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the final cinematic entry for the year. Though it will be followed by the final episode of Hawkeye on Disney+, which airs on December 22, there won’t be another film in the MCU until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was delayed to May 6, 2022.

Tom Holland first donned the Spidey suit in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, in which he was recruited by Iron Man to aid during the brawl on the airfield. His solo trilogy began with Spider-Man: Homecoming the following year, in addition to his appearances in the next two Avengers team-up films. Although Spider-Man’s further appearance in the MCU was questioned due to complicated negotiations between Marvel and Sony, the company that owns the rights to the character, it has since been confirmed that Holland will be returning in a brand new Spider-Man trilogy in future phases of the MCU.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Tom Holland discussed the ways he is able to stay cool while in the Spider-Man suit on set. He explains that there are batteries in the back of the helmet and that there are fans in the eyes that “supposedly cool [him] down,” though they only “worked once.” The costume helmet’s only access point is the eyes, which are removable. He can run a tube through the eye sockets to allow him to drink while he’s in costume, and Norton shared a rather disturbing image of the actor drinking a frappuccino that looks like something closer to an episode of The Strain than a Marvel movie. [With the suit on, I can eat] some things.… Essentially they put – so the eyes pop out… And there used to be these fans. I remember them bragging about they added in these fans that you could click and it would supposedly cool me down. They worked once.

I have these hot batteries in my helmet that I put my head on. But there’s a hole underneath the eye socket where we used to be able to feed a tube down and I could drink without taking the suit off, because it… takes a lot of time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will follow Peter Parker as he asks Doctor Strange for help making the world forget his secret identity. Unfortunately, the spell goes awry and causes the multiverse to come crashing through into his own world. He will have to face a legion of previous Spider-Man villains including Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, with Rhys Ifans’ Lizard and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2.

A major takeaway from this reveal about the behind-the-scenes details of Spider-Man: No Way Home is the fact that Tom Holland does in fact spend a lot of time in the suit. Many superhero films almost exclusively use CGI to render their heroes when they are masked. While this technique is certainly going to be used in many places during the film, it’s exciting to learn that there are going to be certain kinetic, real stunts being performed by humans in suits for at least some portion of the movie, which helps ground this larger-than-life story in something tactile and accessible.
