Tom Holland Has Really Specific Reason for Disliking IronSpider Costume

Tom Holland reveals that the Iron-Spider suit is his least-favorite Spider-Man suit when being interviewed with Zendaya about Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Iron-Spider suit is one of many costumes that Holland’s Peter Parker dons in the latest MCU Spider-Man movie. Holland is joined by Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Benedict Cumberbatch, with Alfred Molina, Willem Defoe, and Jamie Foxx reprising their roles from previous Sony Spider-Man movies.

The Iron-Spider suit was first teased in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) presents Peter with the suit alongside his offer to join the Avengers after defeating the Vulture (Michael Keaton). Peter declines Tony’s offer, but would finally wear the suit after heading to space in Avengers: Infinity War, carrying it over into Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Though the Integrated Suit and Black and Gold suit feature heavily in marketing, the Iron-Spider suit returns in No Way Home, with promotional clips teasing comparisons with Doctor Ock’s (Molina) tentacles. Despite the costume featuring so heavily in Holland’s time in the MCU so far, the actor has issues with the costume.

When being interviewed by IMDb alongside Zendaya about the recently released Spider-Man movie, Holland was asked what his favorite suit. After revealing that the Homemade Suit from Homecoming is his favorite, Holland revealed he dislikes the Iron-Spider suit. He stated that the gold gauntlets made it hard to move his wrists, before joking with Zendaya that they’d be constantly bruising his hands and were unrealistic. Holland said that though there were aspects of the suit he likes, the gauntlets make it difficult to recreate Spider-Man’s iconic ‘thwip’ pose. Check out Holland and Zendaya’s response below.

“Tom Holland: Do you want to know what annoys me about it? Those stupid gauntlets, right? You can’t do that with his wrists?

Zendaya: That’s where you draw the line, in reality, dude?

Tom Holland: Yes! That’s why people love these movies, because albeit, it’s fantastical, logistically it makes sense! Mate, imagine the bruises he must have on his poor hands!… There’s cool aspects to it, it’s just the hand thing irritates me. That’s why when I shoot webs in the suit, I don’t do this, I do this!”

The Stark technology suits are an aspect that writers have been concerned about. Spider-Man Homecoming writer Jonathan Goldstein feared the suit would draw Iron Man comparisons, revealing during a watch party that the suit’s in-built AI would draw comparisons to Iron Man and JARVIS. Despite featuring so heavily across Holland’s time in the MCU, the character is separated from the suit in most of his solo stories so-far, with the suit only being teased in Homecoming and being left in New York during Peter’s Europe school trip in Far From Home, allowing him to develop as a character outside of the Stark influence.

The Stark-developed suits have been a point of debate among fans throughout the character’s time in the MCU, though Holland’s perspective is surely a new one. Much of the fan debate is focused on its ties to Tony Stark, while Holland’s dislike comes from a more practical perspective. With Spider-Man: No Way Home teasing the suit meeting its match when facing Doc Ock, perhaps Holland won’t have to worry about wearing the Iron-Spider suit any longer.
