Tom Holland Is Right To Not Confirm SpiderMan 3 Spoilers

Tom Holland is right to not confirm any Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 spoilers. Since the actor joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War, he’s earned himself a bit of a reputation for having loose lips in interviews. At this point, Holland spoiling Marvel movies to the press has become a running gag. Co-stars like Robert Downey, Jr. have teased Holland about his bad habit, and Avengers: Infinity War co-writer Stephen McFeely admitted he still doesn’t trust Holland. Because of this, there’s always interest in what the actor has to say – to see if he’ll let anything else slip.

But after being involved in the MCU for years now, Holland seems to have gotten better at playing coy. Despite claiming to know all of the Spider-Man 3 spoilers, he has not accidentally revealed any massive twists while discussing the movie in interviews. In fact, Holland comes across as a seasoned franchise movie veteran, blatantly dodging questions about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s reported involvement. Holland even claims to not know what Spider-Man 3 is about. As amusing as his penchant for spoilers was, it’s a good thing he’s now keeping secrets.

When it comes to highly-anticipated tentpoles, studios like to be in control of the information rollout. Over the course of a pre-release marketing campaign, they’ll reveal bits and pieces they’re comfortable with, telling talent what they can and cannot say publicly. There’s typically a strategy behind the timing of official announcements and reveals, meaning things aren’t likely to come out ahead of time in interviews (most definitely Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Man 3 roles). Holland almost assuredly knows what happens in the film’s narrative, but also understands what he’s at liberty to say. If he shared something he couldn’t, he would get in trouble. He likely wouldn’t get fired, but it’s still better for him to stay on Marvel and Sony’s good side.

Furthermore, by keeping key details under lock and key, Holland ensures he doesn’t rob viewers of the magic of Spider-Man 3’s biggest reveals. If he confirmed Maguire and Garfield now, that would lessen the impact of seeing the two former Spider-Men onscreen together. Despite being widely reported, the studio has not officially commented on their roles (or any of the presumed returning Spider-Man actors, for that matter). They’re likely holding back for either the first trailer or the film premiere itself, serving up a surprise a la J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Far From Home. While some viewers enjoy learning everything they can ahead of time, there’s a large section of audience members that would prefer to go in unspoiled and experience the film the way it was meant to be seen for the first time.

In some respects, Holland’s bad spoiling habit was somewhat endearing. He genuinely came across as an excited youngster who was as passionate about the Marvel movies as the fans, excited to talk about them in any way. And at the time, he was still learning the ropes with regard to what he could and couldn’t say in interviews. But now, with multiple press tours under his belt, Holland is far more comfortable in this realm and has a better grasp of how to answer certain questions. Since he’s going to stick around in the MCU for at least the next handful of years (Spider-Man has another appearance planned), the new and improved media savvy Holland means Marvel’s secrets are safe for Spider-Man 3 and beyond.
