Tom Holland Opens Up On Working With Alfred Molina In No Way Home

Tom Holland opens up about working with Alfred Molina in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While Eternals is next up on Marvel’s 2021 release slate, this MCU Phase 4 film is perhaps the more fiercely anticipated of the two. No Way Home released its first trailer in late August, and it broke a viewership record previously held by Avengers: Endgame.

In No Way Home, Holland suits up for his third solo-outing as Spider-Man, picking up right after J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) exposes Peter Parker’s secret identity to the world in 2019’s Far From Home. The upcoming film sees Peter turn to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for a magical solution to this mess, but a mishap casting a dangerous spell accidentally opens up a multiversal portal. This is expected to unleash multiple villains from past Spider-Man franchises into the MCU, and the trailer confirmed Holland’s Peter will be facing off against Molina’s Doctor Octopus, reprising his role from 2004’s Spider-Man 2.

In a recent conversation with EW, Holland opens about getting the chance to work with Molina on the MCU film, calling him “one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with.” He also noted that it was interesting to watch Molina work with the advanced technology. In Sam Raimi’s film, Doc Ock’s tentacles were created using practical effects, but now they are entirely computer-generated, which apparently took some getting used to:

[Molina is] one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with. It was really fun to watch him see how technology has advanced. When he was making these films, the arms were puppets, and when we did it, they’re all imaginary and CG. It was quite cool to see him relive it, but also relearn it.

Holland has thus far starred opposite villains played by Michael Keaton (Vulture) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Mysterio) in his previous Spidey films, not to mention the unbelievable ensembles he was part of in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Other than Holland, regulars returning for the threequel include Zendaya as MJ, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Jacob Batalon as Ned, and Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson. Jamie Foxx will also be reprising his role as Electro, and given the trailer’s shot of a pumpkin bomb, an appearance from Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin remains likely.

Considering the array of talented thespians Holland has shared the screen with, it’s quite high praise to name Molina as one of his favorites. It’s still unclear just how large a role Doc Ock will play in No Way Home, as he could be the film’s primary villain or just one of many in an ensemble known as the Sinister Six. Rumors also continue to swirl that Sony’s two previous Spider-Men, Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield, will reprise their roles, despite many statements to the contrary from the film’s actors. All questions will be answered soon enough, though, as Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17.
