Tom Holland confirms that, as well as being a fan of Insomniac Games’ interpretation of Spider-Man on Playstation, one of the moves from the games will feature in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The upcoming third instalment of Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy promises to bring together elements from prior franchises in a multiverse-crossover feature. So far this has mainly been shown via returning villains such as Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, though fans are eagerly anticipating a meeting between the three cinematic Spideys in a showdown with a sinister assembly of bad guys.

Of course, while bringing the three on-screen Spider-Men together would be a huge moment, other multiverse events involving the character have never been shy about getting weird. An earlier instance of a dimension-breaking Spidey crossover came in the final two episodes of the ’90s animated series, which would inspire Spider-Man comic writer Dan Slott to rework the concept into a fully-fledged event in 2014’s “Spider-Verse” storyline. This was, of course, loosely adapted into the Oscar-winning animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which saw Miles Morales team up with a wide range of fellow Spider-people, including a Japanese-American schoolgirl and a talking pig.

It seems that, while no other Spider-people are confirmed to appear in No Way Home, the film will at least be paying tribute to one particular Spider-Man. Holland confirms in an interview with Extraordinerd that the new film will see his Web-slinger use a move from the Peter Parker featured in the current series of games on PlayStation. Holland says that he is a big fan of the games produced by Insomniac Games and that Sony provided him with a PS5 to play in his downtime while filming No Way Home. When asked if the game would be referenced at all, he reveals that “There’s actually one move that Spider-Man does in the game that we took and he does in the film, and it’s really cool.”

Holland did not specify which particular move from the game made it to live action, so it seems fans will have to wait for the film’s release. The original game on PS4 was an immense commercial success which won many awards and has so far spawned two follow-ups to create a new Spidey video game series. Thus, that version of the character (played by Yuri Lowenthal) has been heartily embraced by the fandom, with the distinctive white spider-suit being featured as a background detail in the aforementioned Into the Spider-Verse. This also isn’t the first time Holland’s films have taken inspiration from the games, as the final moments of Far From Home show Spider-Man taking selfies mid-swing in a visual nod to the games’ photo mode.

While this is a minor influence on the film, this detail does make it clear that, as video games are evolving as a relatively young art medium, they are being more widely noticed and admired by their Hollywood peers. This can be seen quite directly in recent faithful adaptations of games such as Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, or films that adopt video-game mechanics, such as the first-person perspective used in Hardcore Henry. Regardless, fans will undoubtedly be thrilled to know that Holland and potentially other higher-ups at Sony are well aware of Insomniac’s efforts and that there will be one more slight multiverse twist to Spider-Man: No Way Home.
