Tom Holland Wants a SpiderMan Prequel Short Film About Peter Ned & MJ

Spider-Man: No Way Home star, Tom Holland, wants a prequel film to further explore the friendship of Peter Parker, MJ, and Ned. The three characters have served as the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films. Though Holland’s Spider-Man was introduced in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, Jacob Batalon’s Ned and Zendaya’s MJ weren’t introduced until the character’s first solo MCU flick, Spider-Man: Homecoming, in 2017. That film focused largely on the friendship between Peter and Ned, with MJ (referred to as Michelle until the end of the film) mainly sticking to herself and occasionally commenting on Peter and Ned’s high school antics.

The relationship between Peter and MJ was given a lot more development in Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019, which ultimately ended in the two finally striking up a romantic relationship. Despite the focus on these three characters, the MCU has yet to actually establish how they met. The Jon Watts-directed Spider-Man films throw the viewer into the middle of their friendship, and the chemistry and banter between the actors does a lot of the heavy lifting. It’s unclear if the characters became friends when they were young or if they met in high school, but those details could potentially be revealed in the newly announced Spider-Man: Freshman Year, an animated Disney+ series that will explore Peter’s first year as the web-swinger during his freshman year of high school.

In a new interview with Nerdist, however, Holland states that he’d like to see the beginning of Peter, Ned, and MJ’s friendship explored in a short prequel film. He says that he’d like to see younger actors brought in to play their characters as children meeting in elementary school. His full quote reads:

“We’d love to make a little short film or something with some younger actors to explore how [Peter, Ned, and MJ] got together for the first time. Maybe [Peter and Ned] were being bullied at school and MJ steps in and saves the day or something, and you’re like ‘Oh wow! That’s how they became friends!’ Because we really don’t know, it’s up to the audience’s interpretation I guess.”

Zendaya responded to Holland’s comments by saying that “In in my head, they’ve known each other since like Kindergarten.” Holland built on that comment by saying that he just thinks it would be really cute to bring in 6 or 7-year-old actors to play their younger counterparts. It wouldn’t be the first time that a younger Peter has appeared in the MCU, as a boy who briefly appears in Iron Man 2 has retroactively been confirmed as a child Peter Parker. It’s not impossible that the short film Holland wants could happen, as Marvel Studios has dabbled in shorts before with their “Marvel One-Shots,” which have appeared as bonus content on various MCU Blu-ray releases.

The story of how Peter, Ned, and MJ met is something that could very easily be explored in the animated Spider-Man: Freshman Year. It’s still uncertain if Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon are returning for the animated series, though. No cast has been announced, but Holland notably did not voice Peter in the What If…? animated series on Disney+ this year, despite many different MCU stars lending their voices to that series. It is expected that Freshman Year will finally fill in the details of the MCU Spider-Man’s origins, and how Ned and MJ entered his life would certainly fit in well in that story.
