Tom Holland Wants to Produce SpiderMan Movie Starring Another Actor

WARNING! This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland says he might produce another Spider-Man movie starring a new actor as the famous web-slinger. Spider-Man: No Way Home marks the sixth time Holland has played Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the follow-up to 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios/Sony and director Jon Watts’ final entry in the “Homecoming” trilogy explores the fallout of Spider-Man’s identity being revealed to the world by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).

In Peter and Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) attempts to make everyone forget he is Spider-Man, the pair end up bringing iconic characters from Sony’s past into the MCU. Coming into conflict with Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and with a little help from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Holland’s Spider-Man learns the meaning of “with great power comes great responsibility.” Spider-Man: No Way Home’s final minutes wipe the slate clean for Holland, Marvel Studios, and Sony, leaving the studios a whole lot of options moving forward.

In a recent interview with THR, Holland spoke about the future of Spider-Man. The 25-year-old actor reasserted his love for the character while alluding to the possibility of taking a break from web-slinging. In fact, Holland hinted at his potential role as a producer on a Spider-Man film that stars an actor other than himself. Read what he had to say below:

“In all honesty, I don’t know the answer to [my Spider-Man future]. There have been conversations about the future of Spider-Man. Whether it will be with me, I’m not too sure yet … Maybe I’ll be a producer or something, I don’t know. But I do know that I love this character and I would be sad to say goodbye, but I have achieved basically everything I wanted to achieve as this character.”

Holland has been open about perhaps wanting to take a break from both Spider-Man and acting. He’s already set to appear next in Sony’s Uncharted, and star in a Fred Astaire biopic produced by Spider-Man movie veteran Amy Pascal. Coming off the third biggest opening weekend in history, Spider-Man: No Way Home not only represents a high point for Spider-Man, but superhero cinema in general. And given it essentially detaches Holland’s Spider-Man from the MCU (if necessary), Sony can do whatever they want with the character moving forward. In its third act, Spider-Man: No Way Home teases the pending arrival of Miles Morales, whose popularity continues to grow via Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse franchise and video games.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending could facilitate a divorce between Marvel/Disney and Sony should another contractual agreement à la 2019 occur, Pascal and Marvel boss Kevin Feige have confirmed that the studios are already developing a story for Spider-Man 4. Sony is committed to at least one more Spider-Man appearance in a Marvel/Disney movie, and Pascal has explicitly said she’d like Holland to lead the next Spider-Man trilogy. However, the actor has no obligation to put the mask back on after Spider-Man: No Way Home should he wish to step aside. But whether Holland goes on to produce, star, or mentor a young Miles Morales in another movie, his performance in Spider-Man: No Way Home has already cemented him as a worthy Peter Parker in the Marvel history books.
