Tony Stark Secretly Built His Own Celestial Armor (For Good Reason)

Warning! Spoilers for Hulk #1 by Marvel Comics below

The Hulk knows about Tony Stark’s most secret project, as his fellow hero revealed he’s aware of his plans with Celestial tech and the top-secret Project A.R.K. The issue shows off the biggest Iron Man suit ever with insane cosmic capabilities. However, unfortunately for the rest of the Marvel Universe, the out-of-control Hulk wants to use the Celestial’s power for his own gain.

During Marvel’s epic King in Black event, Tony Stark was able to bond a Celestial that Knull enslaved with his Extremis armor, using symbiote technology to overtake the powerful cosmic being. Iron Man used the Celestial in his battle against the King in Black, giving the heroes one of their best weapons in a fight against his symbiote army. It wasn’t Tony’s first foray in dealing with a Celestial-like armor, as he tried to use a 25,000-foot Godkiller armor during a different cosmic battle but was unable to pilot it. Now, Marvel is revealing Stark isn’t done with the Celestials.

In Hulk #1 by Donny Cates, Ryan Ottley, Frank Martin, and VC’s Cory Petit, Marvel asks what if the Hulk exists to protect the world from Bruce Banner? In the issue, Banner has somehow gained control of the Hulk and augmented him with powerful tech. As a result, Banner controls the Hulk like a starship, as he’s created his own mind palace to operate his most dangerous side. Tony Stark uses the Hulkbuster to stop his former ally, but his mammoth suit gets ripped apart. The Hulk goes into Iron Man’s base, where he tells Stark he knows he’s been using celestial energies as a backup plan if another attack like the King in Black’s occurs.

Tony Stark’s intentions with the giant Celestial-powered armor are surprisingly unselfish. He wants to use the suit’s massive power to create a wormhole to a pocket dimension where people can be safe just in case of another world-ending threat attacks. Sadly, the Hulk intentionally jumps into the wormhole, as Stark can only stand by and watch.

Stark has always been one to have multiple tech projects on the go at once, but the fact he was using Celestials energies to build a failsafe for the world shows how genius he is. Constructing an Iron Man armor that’s so huge using extremely powerful (and assumably dangerous) cosmic energies shows how much the King in Black attack affected him and how much he wants to prevent something similar from ever happening again. Considering Iron Man’s previous Celestial encounters, this likely isn’t the last readers will see of Tony Stark’s most impressive armor yet.
