Too Hot To Handle Why Marvins Win Is A Feminist Issue

Marvin’s win on Too Hot To Handle sparked conversation around feminist issues as it relates to reality TV. Too Hot To Handle is a reality show on Netflix about personal development and growth. The premise of the show is that attractive, and promiscuous, singles are put on an island together and must refrain from sexual contact with one another. Throughout the show, the contestants are given personal development workshops about how to communicate better, foster better relationships, and have more respect for their bodies. Each time the rules are violated, due to physical contact between contestants, money is deducted from the prize fund. In the end, the winners receive cash prizes for their personal growth.

So far, Too Hot To Handle has had two seasons and has changed its format for choosing a winner, each time. In season 1, all the players who made it to the end (without being eliminated) were considered winners and they all split the prize money. The result was a total of 10 winners sharing the $75,000 prize. Season 2, however, had a different method in choosing the winner: three contestants were chosen and the other players had to vote for which of their peers they felt deserved the entirety of the prize fund. The season ended with Marvin Anthony winning the entire $55,000 over Carly Lawrence and Cam Holmes.

One could argue that Marvin’s Too Hot To Handle win sheds light on a feminist issue: men tend to get credit for doing the bare minimum while women need to go above and beyond to receive recognition. Throughout the ten-episode season, it can be argued that Marvin did not show any personal development until the final two or three episodes, yet he won the entire competition. As opposed to Carly, who showed continuous growth throughout the entire season, yet did not receive a single vote to win. Marvin started the show by quickly showing interest in a fellow contestant: Melinda Melrose. Marvin and Melinda had a tumultuous beginning to their relationship, in which Marvin consistently flirted with other contestants and then gaslighted Melinda when she did the same. In the final episodes of the season, Marvin had a breakthrough in which he spoke about his love for his mother and his realization that he should show all women the same respect that he shows to his mother. In the end, he asked Melinda to be his girlfriend and declared that he was a changed man.

Carly, on the other hand, had a far steadier and more consistent Too Hot To Handle journey. She had several breakthroughs throughout the season, including learning to stand up for herself and demand better treatment from men she’s romantically interested in. She also expressed interest in finding a long-term relationship and tried to find a stable partner while on the show. Carly also admitted to, and expressed regret in, cheating in previous relationships and consistently stated that she was ready and willing to change. At the end of the season, Carly had a budding relationship with a fellow contestant: Joey Joy. Despite her eager and convincing growth, Carly did not get a single vote for the win, while Cam got three and Marvin got four votes, crowning him the winner.

Ultimately, it can be argued that Marvin’s win was due to the sexist disposition that men should be rewarded for the smallest progress while women need to work twice as hard to get the same amount of credit. If one were to simply add up the number of episodes in which each contestant showed progress, Carly would have been the clear winner. This begs the question, why did the Too Hot To Handle contestants vote for Marvin to win? Could it be the sensationalism attached to his last-minute breakthrough? Perhaps they simply liked him more? Or could it be that society made them believe that a man deserves $55,000 for realizing the error in his ways, at the last second, while a woman’s continuous growth is worth $0?
