Parts 1 and 2 of Attack on Titan’s Final Season are strong outings from top to bottom, but as with every franchise, there are some episodes that stand out more than others. It is these episodes that solidify exactly why Attack on Titan finds itself in the running for greatest anime of all time.

At the end of Season 3, Eren and his comrades venture outside the walls to observe the ocean for the very first time. While the Corps celebrate the discovery, Eren acknowledges that on the other side of the ocean are Paradis’ enemies, brilliantly foreshadowing his eventual animosity towards the rest of the world.

Season 4’s first episode thrusts the viewer into the midst of an ensuing war between Marley and the Mid-East Alliance. After losing the Female and Colossus Titans four years prior, Marley’s enemies seize the opportunity to benefit from the nation’s depleted military forces. Marley is victorious and temporarily restores fears of its military might.

Zeke obliges and learns a lot about the Titans from Xaver, including how to activate the Founding Titan’s power despite King Fritz’s renouncement of war. Years later, Zeke and Eren meet in Marley and Eren agrees to Zeke’s euthanasia plan. Back in the present, Levi saws off Zeke’s leg. In response, Zeke triggers the Thunder Spear in his torso and blows Levi away while his own body is severed in half.

Gabi kills Lobov and uses the wire from his gear to climb aboard the airship. Inside, she fires the rifle she picked up from a fallen soldier and strikes Sasha in the torso. Before long, the Scouts discover Sasha is dead. Eren chuckles while Jeans blames him for her death, concluding one of the series’ saddest episodes.

Galliard goes after the Scouts’ airship, but Mikasa slices the legs from his Titan. Eren further decimates the Jaw Titan before using it to crush the crystal containing Lara’s body. Eren consumes her blood and acquires the War Hammer’s powers. He attempts to eat the Jaw next, but Reiner transforms just in time to divert Eren’s attention to conclude an absolutely mind-blowing episode.

Colt begs him not to, explaining that Falco ingested some of Zeke’s spinal fluid, but his pleas fall on deaf ears as Zeke screams anyway.

Zeke orders Falco to attack Reiner before Magath shoots the Beast Titan’s nape. Zeke catches Eren’s head and is transported with Eren inside the Coordinate. Here, Zeke learns that he and Eren aren’t on the same page, which concludes one of the Season’s most eventful episodes.

Ymir heads toward the Coordinate, but Eren frees himself from the chains securing him in place and runs after her. He witnesses her memories and learns the truth about the Founding Titan. It is revealed that Ymir had encountered a large spindly creature as a child and had been transformed into a massive Titan.

Ymir cultivates the wilds and builds roads using the Titan power, and as a “reward,” the King has Ymir bear his children. When Ymir is struck by a spear, Fritz has his daughters eat their mother’s body to retain the Titan powers. Back in the present, Eren uses this knowledge to convince Ymir he will end her slavey. Moments later, he is finally able to initiate the Rumbling. Eren has won and gained control of the Founding Titan in a fantastically well-written episode that is perhaps the series’ most important.
