With two major feature films released and a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor, 2019 was quite the year for Brad Pitt. His breakthrough performance was in Thelma and Louise was 29 years ago, and from the day of its release onwards, he has not ceased to star in major Hollywood films. He has yet to win an Academy Award for acting, and maybe the time will finally come this year – he seems to have a shot with either Ad Astra or Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.
Over the course of his career, he’s done dramas, comedies, action films, and romantic films and excelled at pretty much all of these. His career comprises of so many roles – leading and secondary – so here we have narrowed it down to Brad Pitt’s 10 best performances.
10 War Machine
War Machine may not have been a huge success when it was released by Netflix three years ago, but it provided Brad Pitt with the most original role of his career yet. From his appearance to the timbre of his voice, Brad Pitt is unrecognizable. The actor had to transform for this role as a four-star general to look like the real Glenn McMahon, who is about 10 years older than Brad Pitt.
While some thought that Brad Pitt’s performance was a bit over-the-top; it was simply in tune with the movie’s satirical tone. Changing his entire facial expressions and his stance, Brad Pitt embodies McMahon perfectly; the unusual but unique aspects of this general who is always walking the fine line between right and wrong.
9 Inglourious Basterds
He may have stolen the show in Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, but Inglourious Basterds remains Brad Pitt’s superior performance in a Quentin Tarantino film. Brad Pitt is simply hilarious. Flaunting a thick mustache and drawling out his words with a Southern accent (just like with his hilariously terrible Italian accent), his role as an American Lieutenant whose only goal is to kill – more precisely scalp – as many nazis as possibly has to be one of his best.
Amidst all the craziness regarding war, spies, revenge, and killing, Brad Pitt’s character is one of the few funny ones. Even though he spends his time leading a team of ‘basterds’ who hunt and kill nazis, Brad Pitt plays the character with a cool, laid-back aspect to him, and he’s impossible not to love.
8 The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Brad Pitt ventures out on a beautiful, emotional and predominantly unique love story. His character, Benjamin Button, is born with a never-seen-before, inexplicable condition that makes him age in appearance as he grows up. Brad Pitt draws us into the special mind of someone who is dealing with being so different, and whose life is turned around when he meets a girl who accepts him as he is.
Benjamin starts to live and feel more, when he is with her, desperately trying to push past the fact that he is only growing younger as she grows older. Brad Pitt plays the complexities of this character and his situation beautifully.
7 Fight Club
It’s been more than 20 years since the film’s release, but Fight Club remains Brad Pitt’s most famous film. It’s not just his individual performance, though, but also his chemistry with Edward Norton that’s amazing. There’s something strange and disturbing about the way these two work together, and it’s impossible to explain until the very end when everything comes into place.
Mysterious, obnoxious, and a little crazy, Brad Pitt makes his character both infuriating and fascinating. We want to hate him and scream at Norton’s character to get away, but we’re also to captivated by what he has to say, what he has to show us.
6 Se7en
Broody, mysterious and heartbreaking, Se7en is a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat during its entire running time. Brad Pitt plays perhaps the most relatable character in the movie – just like him, we are intrigued, frustrated and horrified; desperate to find out who is behind all the gory murders and what the deal with the sins references is.
Brad Pitt delivers a heart-wrenching performance when the movie climaxes; we see his painful breakdown as he finally becomes wrath. The David Fincher/Brad Pitt duo is one that works terrifically well, and we can’t wait to see it, hopefully, come back.
5 Snatch
After the success of Fight Club, it was a bold move for Brad Pitt to take on a secondary role in a British comedy as a guy with an incomprehensible accent. Playing a Gypsy box-fighting champion in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch, Brad Pitt may not have a lot of scenes, but he steals the show.
He may play another fighter with a similarly dirty look, but Brad Pitt’s character is pretty different from Fight Club. A big momma’s boy, the boxer can go from childish to menacing in a blink of an eye. One minute Brad Pitt is grinning and joking around, and the next he’s knocking a guy out with one punch.
4 12 Monkeys
12 Monkeys is a weird movie. Brad Pitt plays a mentally ill patient with small ticks, wide eyes, and an extremely fast-talking mouth. It’s seriously impressive how well Brad Pitt can deliver all his lines so fast. And he has great lines. Watching Brad Pitt playing a mad character with a unique philosophy makes is one of the most interesting parts of the movie.
Brad Pitt’s character is already pretty overwhelming, and his performance is made even more intense with canted angles, uncomfortable close-ups and the disturbing green-yellow color grading of the film.
3 Babel
In Babel, his first film with his Curious Case Of Benjamin Button co-star Cate Blanchet, Brad Pitt gives us one of his more subtle, realistic performances to date. The film follows various characters through traumatic situations and emotional issues they deal with.
One scene particularly is very representative of Brad Pitt’s talent in this film: he is on the phone with his daughter, who hasn’t seen a while. We can see that just hearing her voice breaks him, and although he manages to sound rather normal as he tells her that everything will be okay, we can see that he’s unable to hold back his tears. The moment is simple, but terribly emotional and moving.
2 Moneyball
Moneyball brings the real-life story of Billy Beane and the way he changed the rules of baseball to the big screen. Considered one of his best performances, Brad Pitt got a lot of praise for his take on the former baseball player turned manager. Billy is a leader, he is fair and passionate, but he can also get ahead of himself during difficult situations – which the movie is full of – and Brad Pitt plays the part perfectly well.
Brad Pitt shows us a softer side to this man, too, that comes out when he is with his daughter. The actor reveals the depths and the strengths of Billy and pulls us into the passionate world of baseball.
1 The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Once again, Brad Pitt brings a real-life person to the big-screen, but this time it’s the legendary murderer Jesse James and – you guessed it – his assassination. It’s a long, beautiful movie with captivating cinematography and an enchanting performance by Brad Pitt.
He is almost too convincing as the famous killer; seeming quiet and collected for most of the movie, until he pulls out his knife and bursts into a piercing fit of villain laughter. Between Fight Club, 12 Monkeys and Jesse James, it seems Brad Pitt has a gift for portraying a little madness. It will never get old seeing him in roles like these.
