Rick Moranis was everywhere in the 1980s, starting out on the Canadian sketch comedy show, SCTV, and starring in some of the most influential films of the 1980s and 1990s.

Although Moranis has stuck to voice acting and releasing albums here and there since the 1990s, his iconic films are always worth a rewatch. Let’s revisit some of the actor’s top-rated roles according to Rotten Tomatoes!

10 Brother Bear 2 (2006) – 50%

Surprisingly, the sequel to the animated film Brother Bear has a higher rating than the original. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis reprise their roles as bumbling moose brothers based on their characters from Strange Brew.

In this sequel main bear Kenai runs into a woman he knew from his past life as a man and they begin connecting again, which upsets his younger bear brother Koda. They continuously run into Thomas and Moranis’ characters on their journey and they provide hilarious comic relief.

9 Ghostbusters 2 (1989) -53%

The sequel to the iconic film sees the four protagonists again on the outskirts of society after their ghostbusting team is disbanded. Although they saved New York from various ghouls from another dimension they were blamed for the destruction of the city.

The team is brought back together when Bill Murray’s son is in danger and get reinstated after the Judge hearing their case has a run-in with a few ghosts. Rick Moranis reprises his role as Louis Tully who helps the Ghostbusters save the city however he can.

8 Spaceballs (1987) – 59%

Spaceballs is a Mel Brooks directed spoof of the Star Wars franchise. The film creates a world that is similar to Star Wars and the references easily recognizable.

Bill Pullman as Lone Starr travels with his companion, John Candy as a half-human/half-dog named Barf to save Daphnie Zuniga as Princess Vespa. All paralleling Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia. Rick Moranis plays the hilariously wacky and incompetent Dark Helmet, meant to be a Darth Vader type.

7 Streets Of Fire (1984) – 67%

Streets of Fire is a cult-classic that follows a vigilante as he attempts to save his famous musician ex-girlfriend (Diane Lane) after she’s kidnapped by a local biker gang led by a young Willem Dafoe.

It’s a gritty and violent film that’s highly stylized and has a rocking soundtrack, so the cult-classic status isn’t a surprise. Rick Moranis has a decent size role in the film as the musician’s new boyfriend and manager who pays the vigilante to save her.

6 My Blue Heaven (1990) – 71%

My Blue Heaven stars Steve Martin as an Italian mobster put into the witness protection program and his FBI handler is played by Rick Moranis.

Martin’s over-the-top Italian character wants to go out partying and meeting up with old friends and he clashes with the straight edge Moranis who needs him to follow the rules. The two have been in several films together and are always guaranteed to make the audience laugh.

5 Strange Brew (1983) – 74%

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas reprise their quintessential Canadian characters, Bob and Doug McKenzie. The two brothers are trying to get some free beer from the local brewery and quickly find themselves in the middle of a villainous plot and hilariously never fully realize it.

The two created the characters on the sketch comedy show SCTV and co-wrote and directed this film together.

4 Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (1989) – 75%

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids stars Rick Moranis as a wacky, disorganized, and determined scientist working on getting his shrink ray to work. His kids get his invention working and accidentally shrink themselves.

He eventually figures out what happened, and they start hilariously looking for them, building contraptions in the backyard so they don’t have to worry about accidentally stepping on them while looking for them. The kids have to deal with giant insects and lawnmowers while trying to let their parents know where they are.

3 Little Shop Of Horrors (1986) – 90%

Little Shop of Horrors is a comedy horror musical about the meek Seymour (Rick Moranis) who works and lives in a failing flower shop. He comes across an exotic plant one day and its popularity quickly turns his life around.

The shop becomes a success and he grows closer to his crush, Audrey (Ellen Greene), but he has to pay a terrible price to keep the plant healthy. The film has a great balance of horror and comedy with a fantastic soundtrack and fun supporting cast including Steve Martin, John Candy, and Bill Murray.

2 Parenthood (1989) – 91%

Parenthood stars Steve Martin as a father and perfectionist who begins to re-evaluate his parenting skills as he thinks the way his children are growing up reflects badly on him.

The film also focuses on his two sisters. One sister (Dianne Wiest) is struggling with her two kids as her daughter becomes pregnant and she can’t communicate with her son. His other sister (Harley Jane Kozak) begins to fight with her husband (Rick Moranis) over his strict demeanor and overparenting of their daughter.

1 Ghostbusters (1984) – 97%

Ghostbusters follows three scientists who lose their jobs as college researchers and team up to follow their true passion, researching the paranormal. They start a business, called Ghostbusters, that anyone can call if they have a ghost in their house and they’ll bust the ghost and capture it.

They get a new member and quickly discover a dangerous alternate dimension gateway that has been opened and threatens New York. Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver co-star as neighbors who get caught up in the paranormal activity.
