There’s always been something alluring about the bad boy. He’s suave, dark, aloof, and enchanting. This is no different when it comes to bad boy characters in movies and TV. But they don’t all carry around the trademark leather jacket and it’s more often that their actions speak louder than words.

Who can forget the iconic Gossip Girl couple, Blair and Chuck? The acclaimed Mr.Darcey from Pride & Prejudice also fits the bill. But when it comes to a bad boy, he needs his shining light female counterpart – the girl that changes the bad boy’s ways and makes him experience love and a different side of life.

Good-girl, bad-boy couples have been a thing for as long as storytelling has been around and it shows no signs of stopping. While the trope is rampant in teen shows and movies, it’s also featured in family-friendly Disney movies and adult media as well. It seems like everyone likes to watch a good-girl fall for a bad boy while they simultaneously help each other become better versions of themselves.

20 Bronwyn & Nate – One Of Us Is Lying (2021–)

One of Peacock’s first teen dramas, One Of Us Is Lying, is based on the best-selling teen novel of the same name. Described as The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, the show is full of tons of mystery and soon-to-be iconic bad-boy good-girl pairing.

Brownyn (Marianly Tejeda) is a straight-A student and a good daughter who would never do anything wrong. Meanwhile, Nate (Cooper van Grootel) is the resident bad-boy and drug dealer on campus who only sells drugs to pay for rent. These two might seem like an unlikely pair but they quickly bond over being suspected murders and team up to protect one another.

19 Nathan & Haley – One Tree Hill (2003–2012)

As far as iconic teen drama couples go, Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) from One Tree Hill are as iconic as they come. Needing good grades to continue to play basketball, bad-boy jock Nathan gets paired up with goody-two-shoes Haley for tutoring sessions. To make matters even more complicated Haley is best friends with Nathan’s estranged half-brother.

Opposites attract and Nathan and Haley end up bringing out the best in each other despite starting as a bad-boy, good-girl couple. They even managed to make it through teen pregnancy together and have one of the best marriages on tv.

18 Belle & The Beast – Beauty And The Beast (1991)

When it comes to Disney animated bad-boy, good-girl pairings Belle (Paige O’Hara) and The Beast (Robby Benson) may not be at the top of the list but they should be. After all, The Beast was literally transformed into a beast for refusing to help the enchantress. He spends most of his time being angry and throwing tantrums. Meanwhile, Belle is soft and smart, preferring to read books that deal with the provincial town.

Eventually, Belle and The Beast learn to love each other and Belle even helps bring out his softer side. Isn’t that what bad-boy, good-girl couples are all about?

17 Jess & Justin – 13 Reasons Why (2017–2020)

13 Reasons Why may have been a controversial Netflix teen drama, but it did give fans one of the best good-girl, bad-boy teen couples of all time. At the start of the series Jess (Alisha Boe) is a smart and kind character who even steps in to befriend Hannah (Katherine Langford) when she moves to town. On the other hand, Justin (Brandon Flynn) is a mischievous jock with a troubled home life that doesn’t always speak up when he should.

Those these two might be considered toxic at times, they were always there for each other during the bad parts of their lives. In a way, they almost switch roles too with Jess becoming a “bad-girl” in later seasons leading a revolution and Justin becoming a “good-boy” thanks to the help of Clay (Dylan Minnette).

16 John B & Sarah – Outer Banks (2020–)

Netflix’s Outer Banks premiered in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic giving teen audiences an escape when they needed it most. It also gave them a new good-girl, bad-boy couple to ship relentlessly.

John B. (Chase Stokes) is your typical wild-child bad-boy. Having lost his father last year, John B. fends for himself which often means he and his friends are up to no good. Meanwhile, Sarah (Madelyn Cline) comes from a well-off family who humor her and her need to make the world a better place. These two better each other and corrupt each other making them one of the show’s best relationships.

15 Phoebe & Cole – Charmed (1998–2006)

The classic show, Charmed, from 1998 still holds up as being one the best mystery/supernatural shows to air on television. The show also gave fans a riveting relationship between Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Cole (Julian McMahon). Phoebe may have had her bad girl moments, but compared to Cole she was an angel.

Phoebe and her sisters dedicate themselves to using their powers to rid the world of evil. She also happens to fall in love with Cole, a half-demon. Cole is known in the demon world as the demonic assassin Belthazor and sent to kill the Charmed Ones. Fans had high hopes that Cole would change his ways to live a good life with Phoebe, but he ultimately stays on the dark side.

14 Allison & Wade – Cry-Baby (1990)

Cry-Baby is a hidden gem 1990s teen musical romance movie. It starred Johnny Depp in the lead role as Wade Walker. The movie’s story follows a similar leather-clad bad boy who falls for a normal and simple girl. Wade is known as “Cry-Baby” for his ability to shed one single tear.

He’s feared as being the leader of a gang called “drapes.” One day he’s approached by Allison (Amy Locane), a girl who’s known for always following the rules and being a ‘square.’ They break all social norms and fall in love. Their love story is met with many tough obstacles to overcome.

13 Claire & John – The Breakfast Club (1985)

Is Claire (Molly Ringwald) considered a good girl? She is but isn’t at the same time. In The Breakfast Club, she and other students get Saturday detention. Claire is described as a snobbish princess, who eats sushi and can put on lipstick hands-free.

She’s not exactly ‘good’ and Claire admits to feeling peer pressure from others. As the movie progresses, Claire and John develop some sparks. John is known as the ‘”Criminal” who’s always in trouble. To break her ‘pristine’ image Claire kisses John. Many movie fans recall the scene when John pumps his fist in the air after Claire kisses him again before parting ways.

12 Rapunzel & Flynn – Tangled (2010)

There’s no arguing that Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) is the proclaimed bad boy of Disney animated movies. He got the title because he’s tagged as a thief in the movie who steals the royal princess’s crown. Flynn also isn’t well-liked amongst other thieves and bandits.

While hiding from bandits, Flynn seeks refuge in Rapunzel’s tower. Rapunzel has been shunned from the outside world and the definition of being ‘pure.’ These two make bad-boy good-girl couple work well but in a more sweet and magical way. Flynn changes his ways for true love.

11 Baby & Johnny – Dirty Dancing (1987)

Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) was the epitome of a heartthrob when Dirty Dancing was released in 1987. Taking a look at the character, he wasn’t the cliché bad boy like other characters in this list. He had a good heart and never treated Baby (Jennifer Grey) poorly.

He was given the ‘bad boy’ title because he was the resort’s dance instructor and part of the misfit staff. Because not many guests at the resort really knew Johnyy personally, Baby’s father saw him as a bad example for his daughter. Regardless, the two fell hopelessly in love. No one puts Baby in a corner.

10 Hardin & Tessa – After (2019)

Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) is the definition of what many imagine a bad boy to be. Ripped straight from the Wattpad teen story, Hardin is a bad boy character fans fell for. He’s got it all, from the dazzling good looks, dark clothing, tattoos, and aloof personality.

In After, Tessa (Josephine Langford) is a sweet and dedicated student who’s new to campus. Her life gets flipped upside down when she meets Hardin. At first, she’s convinced she can stay away, but their budding relationship breaks down her sheltered way of life. Of course, Hardin falls for Tessa, but it’s not easy as he harbors anger issues and there’s an ulterior motive for his interest in her.

9 Dylan & Brenda – Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990–2000)

When it comes to bad boys, they’re often misunderstood, harbor a dark past, or are emotionally unavailable. The hit show Beverly Hills, 90210 had a couple that easily fit the bad-boy-good-girl trope.

Dylan McKay, played by the late Luke Perry, was first introduced in the show as being intelligent and wise beyond his years. But he’s scarred from his past and struggles with alcohol abuse, which made him volatile at times. It all changed when he falls for well-grounded Brenda (Shannen Doherty). Brenda becomes his shining light who helps him with his alcoholism and parental abandonment issues. And this wouldn’t be a bad boy romance without Brenda’s parents trying to split them up.

8 Sookie & Bill – True Blood (2008–2014)

Bill (Stephen Moyer) from True Blood isn’t necessarily a bad boy. He’s a bad boy by association due to him being a vampire. But he still meets many of the characteristics. He’s broody, alluring, and has a deadly charm. But he has a much sweeter heart than others and the bubbly and kind Sookie becomes entranced by him.

Sookie (Anna Paquin) is the type of good girl character where others intervene because they think she can’t make wise decisions, especially when regarding Bill. But there’s another bad boy Sookie has a relationship with and that’s Eric, who also turns to mush for her.

7 Sandy & Danny – Grease (1978)

The relationship between T-Bird leader, Danny (John Travolta), and the new girl, Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), is iconic when it comes to good-girl and bad-boy couples. In school, Danny is the lead popular guy who likes a bit of mischief, here and there.

The summer before school, he falls head over heels for a wholesome girl named Sandy. They part ways until she transfers to his school. Danny can’t let anyone know about his other personality and resorts to brushing her aside. In the end, the bad boy becomes a softy and the good girl turns a bit bad.

6 Patrick & Kat – 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

While Kat (Julia Stiles) may not be the angelic good girl seen in other movies, she still fits the bill. Kat keeps to herself and is known for being reserved and a bit of a shrew. But things change when she goes out with Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger).

Patrick became many young teens’ image of a dreamboat. He had the smile, the charm, and the dark appeal, even when he stabbed a frog with a knife during class. He’s well known as a bad boy and is scary to the other students. While Patrick originally dates Kat for money, she changes him and helps him break his image. They fall in love and Kat delivers an epic love poem confession.

5 Chuck & Blair – Gossip Girl (2007–2012)

It’s impossible not to include Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester) on this list. Chuck doesn’t have the bad boy image most are used to, though. He wears designer clothes and has a keen sense of fashion, although some outfits are questionable. Nonetheless, the character had the making of a bad boy.

He liked to blackmail and make people’s lives difficult. He got a kick out of seeing other people’s lives crumble and burn. But Blair changed that. There’s no denying that Blair wasn’t an angelic good girl, despite how she presents herself, but there’s a reserved and caring side to her and it’s Blair who ultimately melts Chuck’s heart and gets him to care and fall in love.

4 Annette & Sebastian – Cruel Intentions (1999)

There’s no better example of a mischievous bad boy falling for the good girl than Cruel Intentions. The 1999 teen romantic drama is a cult favorite when it comes to the genre of unexpected young love. This movie has a twist to the bad boy trope. Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) gets a kick out of seducing young women he’s not meant to be with and making them fall in love with him.

His step-sister gets him involved in a bet to woo the new headmaster’s daughter. Annette (Reese Witherspoon) is the definition of pure and good. She even wrote an op-ed piece about waiting until marriage. She becomes entangled in Sebastian’s web but it backfires when Sebastian falls for Annette and sees the error of his evil ways.

3 Buffy & Angel – Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)

This couple is a staple when it comes to supernatural couples on television. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Angel (David Boreanaz) had a romance that was complex, passionate, and heartbreaking. Angel is the definition of dark and alluring. He’s a vampire, after all. Throughout the show, he battles with himself and his darker side.

Although Buffy and Angel know their relationship is doomed, they fall in love anyway, but it only ends tragically. The show also had another bad boy contender, as there was an undeniable romantic tension between Buffy and Spike (James Marsters) and some might say that Spike is even more of a bad boy than Angel.

2 Landon & Jamie – A Walk To Remember (2002)

The unforgettable teen romance movie, A Walk To Remember, will never cease to get audiences tearing up due to the loving yet sad relationship between Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (Mandy Moore).

Landon is the school’s rebellious bad boy and popular guy. He and his friends unintentionally injure another student. As penance, he must do community service, which includes the school play. He asks for the help of social outcast, Jamie, the pastor’s daughter. Jamie asks Landon to not fall in love with her. Landon does so anyway and gets a new outlook on life and a sense of purpose.

1 Damon & Elena – The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017)

Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) became the epitome of a sexy, handsome, and dangerous bad boy that fans loved. He’s the cause for a lot of Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) misfortune and headaches when he returns to Mystic Falls. He ticks all of the boxes when it comes to the stereotypical bad boy: the leather jacket, the dark clothes, the hypnotizing eyes and he’s a vampire.

Damon has no real regard for the chaos he creates until he meets Elena (Nina Dobrev). Elena is a small-town girl struggling with her parents’ death. Damon’s deep-rooted love and care for Elena’s wellbeing change him. In the end, they fall madly in love and awaken parts of themselves they never knew existed, even if the debate as to whether or not she chose correctly is still up for discussion.
