YouTube is home to some bizarre creations and a new standout among them is a chilling fan made trailer that mashes up the visuals of Toy Story with the haunting dialogue of HBO’s Westworld. Pixar’s flagship franchise is more known for inviting laughs and tugging at the heartstrings than for anything resembling Westworld’s unsettling futurism. It follows the adventures of a family of toys who come to life when their owner is away and dissects subjects like finding a place you belong and learning to accept the complications in life.

On the other hand, Westworld details the disturbing goings-on at a theme park, no “not a theme park but an entire world,” where a cast of androids called “hosts” provide a stage for guests to play make-believe in the old west. These guests are given free rein to indulge in their worst vices and use the robotic hosts however they please. This becomes increasingly complicated as the hosts begin to grow some sentience and push back at the existence of servitude that’s been chosen for them.

At first glance, the two properties seem about as disparate as it gets but in his video YouTuber Nico Bellamy finds more than a few links between the two. The connections seem obvious in hindsight, what better mashup for a franchise where dolls spring back and forth between life and inanimateness than a show where “freeze all motor functions” and “bring yourself back online” are repeated every episode? Check out the mashup below:

It turns out, Jessie makes for a pretty compelling Dolores as she shakes off the trauma of her past life and the rest of the trailer’s connections are even better. Creative use of footage makes for a perfect heel turn for Woody while Bellamy doesn’t even need to stretch anything to link Buzz questioning the nature of his reality with Bernard’s self-discovery plot twist. But best of all is the connection of the toys’ owner, Andy, with the host’s megalomaniacal creator, Dr. Ford.

YouTube editors recutting movie trailers as horror is nothing new but the Toy Story/Westworld connection is particularly inspired, right down to its haunting use of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” in the edit’s closing moments. The connections here are so hilariously strong that it’s hard to speculate what inspired it. Was it Buzz and Bernard’s dual crises of identity? Or maybe it was how closely the toys’ mistreatment by the daycare toddlers mirrors the hosts’ abuse? Or maybe this is a sneak peek at one of the show’s as-yet-unrevealed parks. Regardless, this trailer coupled with Westworld’s stellar marketing should keep the season 3 hype train going.
