Toy Story What Happened To Andys Dad (Is He Dead)

Toy Story’s Andy lives with his mother, but whatever happened to his dad? It’s a question that has intrigued audiences for decades, and while seeing a Disney-produced film feature a family with only one parent is far from unusual, the mystery of Andy’s dad has easily become one of the most enduring topics amongst Pixar enthusiasts. In a film series where toys come to life and go on grand adventures while their owners aren’t looking, it says a lot that Andy’s missing father is easily one of the most baffling aspects of the Toy Story franchise.

When the original Toy Story first hit theaters in 1995, most audiences were too busy being fascinated by the unprecedented animation or swept up by the brilliant story to put much thought into Andy’s home life. But as the years passed, viewers began to give more thought to the dynamics of Andy’s family: he obviously had a caring mother, a little sister, and even a dog beginning in Toy Story 2. But nowhere in any of the films was there a single reference to Andy’s dad, not even a simple throwaway line about him being out of the picture.

Could Andy’s father be dead, or simply out of Andy’s life due to divorce or possibly military service? These questions have prompted many Toy Story fans to analyze the film for clues, seek out early scripts and behind-the-scenes info, and even ask those responsible for making the films for an answer. The end result of all this sleuthing has turned up multiple potential answers, many of which contradict each other. While there is currently no definitive answer as to what happened to Andy’s dad, there are plenty of possibilities hinted at by Pixar and theorized by audiences.

Perhaps the most popular online explanation for Andy’s dad being absent from the family comes from a story supposedly told to toy collector and story consultant Mike Mozart by one of the original movie’s writers, the late Joe Ranft. According to the claim, an early draft for Toy Story included a backstory for Andy’s dad involving him having polio as a child, saving Woody from being burnt, and then eventually leaving Woody to his infant son (Andy) after he died. While this theory certainly answers a lot of questions and delivers the kind of heartbreaking drama that Toy Story is known for, there is no proof that this backstory is real. Another of the film’s writers, Andrew Stanton, has gone on record as saying the backstory is “fake news,” and with Ranft’s passing in 2006, the truth may never be known.

More recently (and more credibly), the director and producer of Toy Story 4, Josh Cooley and Mark Nielsen, spoke up about the mystery. While they didn’t have a definitive answer either, they admitted that they thought the idea of Andy’s dad being dead was “taking it pretty far.” They added that they’d both “like to think that maybe [Andy’s parents] split up, maybe he’s still alive and living somewhere in another town.” Cooley even jokingly mentioned that Andy’s dad might have gone into the witness protection program, with Neilson piling on by adding that Andy’s dad could be “part of the CIA and he’s deep undercover.” In the end, the fate of this mysterious Toy Story character is really up to each viewer’s imagination, at least until Pixar provides a concrete answer.
