Transformers 7s Title Explained What Rise Of The Beasts Means

Transformers 7 has finally gotten an official title from Paramount – Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. For longtime fans of the franchise, that title should immediately evoke memories of the 1990s cartoon Beast Wars: Transformers, which featured animal transformations for the eponymous Cybertronian robots, rather than cars and planes. According to the news from Paramount, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will indeed bring big parts of that storyline to the big screen.

Set 300 years after the original cartoon, Beast Wars: Transformers introduced two new factions in the Maximals and the Predacons – descendants of the Autobots and Decepticons, respectively – who travel through a time portal and crash land on prehistoric Earth. The robots continue their battle after awakening, scanning the local wildlife to create new transformations more appropriate for their environment. Due to the inherent differences in design and story, Beast Wars is one of the odder parts of Transformers lore, but it has remained incredibly popular with a subset of dedicated fans.

From what’s been revealed so far about Transformers 7, it seems like a lot – but not all – of those story beats will be kept intact. The new film will feature the Maximals and the Predacons, as well as the Terrorcons, who will be the main villains. Presumably, that will also mean classic Beast Wars characters like Optimus Primal, Rattrap, Dinobot and/or Cheetor being brought to live-action/CGI with their classic animal transformations. With all the advancements made in computer animation over the last few years, that could lead to some exciting action sequences.

Despite its name, however, Rise of the Beasts won’t be exactly a Beast Wars movie. The film is set in 1994, far from the prehistoric timeline of the original cartoon. Optimus Prime has also been confirmed to return, which suggests the original Autobots and Decepticons will be as much a part of the story as the Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons. There will be modern technology, human characters, and real-world locations including Peru and Brooklyn, NY – none of which featured in the classic Beast Wars.

Rise of the Beasts also indicates the new animal-based factions will be new to the Autobots and Decepticons. It’s possible that the time-travel story will be kept, and that the Maximals and Predacons will simply land on 1994 Earth instead of a much older version of the planet. Or, the new factions could have a whole new origin story that makes them outsiders to both the Autobots and Decepticons. For now, fans will have to keep speculating while they wait on more details about Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
