Transformers The 5 Best & 5 Worst Cartoons In The Franchise Ranked

Transformers is one of the most recognizable franchises in the world. This is thanks to the several series Hasbro has been able to put out over the years, guaranteeing that every generation since the ’80s have had some sort of contact with the Autobots and Decepticons and their eternal war.

And there have been some animation gems throughout the different released series. The first The Transformers, for example, its remembered fondly, especially its movie. But sometimes, some of those shows don’t end very good and the Transformers saga has had some downers. Here you’ll find some five of the best series and five of the worst.

10 WORST: Energon

Energon (2004) was the second part of the Unicron Trilogy. Three series that had the titular Unicron as the main antagonist and introduced the concept of Mini-Cons, smaller transformers that, once attached to a much bigger companion, could release a devastating amount of power.

Coming from the first part that received lukewarm reactions, Energon didn’t do much for the trilogy. The series showcased some great animation but its inconsistent storyline and the frequent transformations never changed the idea that the show was more preoccupied with selling toys than anything else.

9 BEST: Robots In Disguise (2015)

Not to be confused with the first Robots In Disguise that was around in 2001. For some reason, Hasbro really likes that name and they didn’t hesitate to use it fourteen years later. This one is a sequel to the Prime series and it actually focuses on Bumblebee as a protagonist.

Coming from one of the best series in the history of Transformers is not an easy feat but Robots in Disguise managed to pull it off thanks to solid writing, great characterization, strong voice acting, and a subversion of the endless conflict between Autobots and Decepticons.

8 WORST: Armada

If Energon was a downer, it’s predecessor was a much bigger one since it introduced many of the concepts that wouldn’t work continuing the Unicron Trilogy. Armada rode the hype train before its released and many were excited for it since it was a “return to form” after the Beast Wars saga.

Sadly, it was a disappointment, to say the least. Clearly more directed towards younger children, the series was infamous for its bad voice acting, animation errors, and push to create new designs to turn in new toys.

7 BEST: Transformers: Animated

When Transformers: Animated was first announced, it wasn’t received in the best of ways. The art style of the show deflated many fans’ enthusiasm for a new series. It was deemed too “cartoonish” and accused of targeting a much younger audience.

In many respects, Transformers: Animated was aimed at little children. It actually tries to make the Autobots into superheroes more than soldiers. And it actually works, with some great storylines and new concepts that refresh the franchise, and, in the end, it received favorable reviews.

6 WORST: Cybertron

The last of the Unicron Trilogy, Cybertron, did nothing try to redeem the saga. It actually made it worse. Hasbro wanted to end the trilogy with Cybertron being the last installment in the series but the Japanese company in charge of production didn’t follow through and made a whole new story unconnected to the two previous ones.

When transmitted in America, the show received a much better dub than before and tried to change some of the dialogue to create connections with Armada and Energon. It didn’t go well.

5 BEST: Prime

Prime is one of the most beloved series of the franchise. Capitalizing on the success of the Transformer movies, Hasbro intended to create a cartoon counterpart with the same cinematic style and high production value. There’s no denying that this is some of the best Transformers animations the franchise has ever seen.

It also, for the delight of longtime fans, brought the original voice actors of Optimus Prime and Megatron: Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. The story also expanded on the mythology and referenced past works with respect.

4 WROST: Robots In Disguise (2001)

The first Robots In Disguise was the product of Hasbro canceling the continuation of Beast Machines, after its failure. They had to reinvent the franchise once more and this left a year of nothing to be released. So, what did they do? Bought the rights to a totally different Japanese story.

This is why this series isn’t connected to the Generation 1 timeline, like the ones before it. It suffers from all the problems the Japanese imports had: bad dubbing and weird storylines.

3 BEST: Generation 1

The one that started it all. The original 1984 series still is remembered as one the best in the franchise. Despite its age, it actually holds pretty well, and people who can get past the dated animation will find strong storytelling, fabulous voice acting, and memorable music.

It’s important to point out that many of the tropes the franchise is still known for, even in the movies, were established here. It goes to show how the series made an impact in young viewers and pop culture, when, after many years, people are still talking about Autobots, Decepticons, Cybertron, Optimus Prime, And Megatron.

2 WORST: Beast Machines

Beast Machines had big shoes to fill being the sequel to one of the most beloved series. Sadly, many fans felt it didn’t do justice to the predecessor. One could say the Beast Machines would be a good show if it wasn’t related to the Transformers saga.

Despite its great animation and voice acting, the series went into a weird direction by changing some things from the canon like making Cybertron an organic planet in the past and making Rhinox into a villain, that didn’t help it to succeed.

1 BEST: Beast Wars

No wonder why Beast Machine had it too hard. It’s safe to say the Beast Wars revitalized the franchise in such a way that it affected every product that has come out since. It’s animation, though dated for today’s standards, was revolutionary for its time and helped bring these characters to life.

The show paid some amazing respect to the original series, building on its lore, and proposing new and cool concepts. It also features the best characterization the franchise has ever seen, thanks to a great voice acting.
