Tremors 7 Discussions Have Begun May Feature Underwater Graboids

Tremors star Michael Gross has confirmed discussions about a possible seventh movie have already begun. Gross has been with the franchise from the very beginning, playing eccentric survivalist Burt Gummer. Burt was a supporting character in the first two entries, but once Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward moved on, he was promoted to lead for every subsequent entry. Gummer was also the lead character of Syfy’s short-lived Tremors series back in 2003, while Gross played Burt’s great-grandfather in prequel Tremors 4: The Legend Begins.

Burt is back again for new entry Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell, with the character and his son Travis traveling to the Arctic to fight a new, ice-based breed of Graboid. After all the previous movies took place in a sunny desert environment, the latest sequel shows the series is getting a bit more adventurous with the choice of setting and variety of monsters on display. The movie also teases the next breed of Graboid Burt faces could be of the underwater variety.

While Tremors 7 isn’t greenlit just yet, Michael Gross recently confirmed in an interview with Daily Dead that discussions for another entry are taking place, including what new forms the creatures might take. Ultimately, it all comes down to cost:

But we have discussed how they might change, and to be honest with you, if we had an unlimited budget, Heather, we could do almost anything. We were discussing this today. But some of the choices we make are constrained by budget. They really are. And unfortunately, because this is show business, where it’s 5% show and 95% business, creative teams can come up with wonderful ideas, but the accountants will say, “Oh no, you can’t do that. That’s too expensive.” So, it’s a balancing act that Universal is constantly doing, but we just had a meeting today about a theoretical Tremors 7, so you never know.

The Tremors franchise has a loyal cult following, and it has a better than average hit rate when it comes to producing entertaining sequels. That said, like Gross says in his comments, they’re produced on modest budgets so the filmmakers can’t get too extravagant dreaming up concepts they literally can’t afford to execute.

Part of the fun of the sequels is how the Graboids evolve in different ways and how Burt has to scramble to adapt, and underwater Graboids would certainly be a fresh angle to take. Whether or not another entry goes ahead is probably dependent on how Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell performs.

News of a potential Tremors 7 may provide some solace to fans after it was recently announced Syfy’s Tremors TV series isn’t going ahead. Kevin Bacon would have returned for the first time since the original Tremors and a pilot was shot, but for whatever reason, the network decided to pass on producing a series. While there’s an outside chance another network could come along and pick it up, it seems more likely that the show is dead.

It’s pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now that’s out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if he’d like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site. A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games – he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU – where Hawkeye is clearly the best character – to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He’s super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
