Turning Red Trailer Anxious Teen Hulks Out & Turns Into A Red Panda

Pixar unveils the first teaser trailer and poster for their next film, Turning Red, offering a monstrous twist on the animated coming-of-age comedy formula. The film hails from Pixar director Domee Shi, Oscar winner of the 2018 short film Bao that screened ahead of The Incredibles 2. Shi first teased development on the film shortly after Bao’s release, with the studio properly announcing its production during last year’s Disney Investor Day.

Turning Red centers on Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly “poofs” into a giant red panda whenever she becomes too excited or emotionally flustered, which is all the time for a teenager. Rosalie Chiang leads the cast as Mei Lee while starring alongside Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Sandra Oh as her protective, if not slightly overbearing, mother Ming. On the heels of the studio’s latest effort Luca arriving on Disney+, Pixar is building up anticipation for the next project in their lineup.

Just over six months after first announcing the title, Pixar has unveiled the first teaser trailer and poster for Turning Red. Set to the tune of Backstreet Boys’ “Larger Than Life,” the video offers a glimpse at the very relatable angst of Mei Lee, her overprotective mother Ming and the fantastical nature of her transformation. While Pixar has always been known for pulling on the emotional heartstrings of audiences, the studio has only recently started exploring the coming-of-age genre with efforts like Inside Out, Onward and Luca, but Turning Red is certainly looking to be their most captivating effort yet. Unlike the recent project, which felt reminiscent of Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Shi’s film is looking like a nice break of formula and a wholly original work. Being a teenager is no easy feat, but transforming in to a large red panda anytime emotions run too high like Marvel’s Hulk would be an even bigger challenge for all having to go through it.

Knowing how the magical worlds of Pixar’s films work, it’s unlikely Turning Red will offer any kind of explanation as to just how Mei Lee transforms. But looking at Shi’s past work with the Oscar-winning Bao, this exposition won’t be necessary as she’s displayed strength in delivering plenty of emotional storytelling without diving too much into the fantastical realism at its core. Unsurprisingly, the first trailer for the film has displayed more of Pixar’s gorgeous animation, sure to build anticipation for its release next March.
