Edward and Bella might be one of the most well-known couples from any franchise ever, but they aren’t necessarily seen as the best example of a relationship. While many fans love them together, and others love the Twilight story despite thinking it can be a bit silly at times, there are some problems that these two have.

They both care about the other and want to keep the other safe, but they both made some notable mistakes. There were definitely moments where Edward and Bella’s relationship isn’t healthy.

10 Edward Did: Stalked her and watched her sleep

Many people have pointed out that Edward had some moments of being an overall creep. While he might get away with it in the series because he’s a vampire, it’s still rather upsetting that he would do things like stalk Bella and watch her while she slept(without her knowing).

He might have done all this under the guise of keeping her safe, but this isn’t really a good excuse.

9 Bella Did: Didn’t take his attempts to distance himself seriously

There are many times when Edward tries to distance himself from Bella or make her slow down and think about things.

He asks her to really consider whether she wants to become a vampire and leave everyone she knows behind, but Bella often just ignores his requests and wants to move the relationship forward as quickly as possible.

8 Edward Did: Tried to make her scared of him

When Bella first figures out that Edward is likely a vampire, there’s the scene where she and Edward are alone in the woods. He makes a pretty impressive and scary show of illustrating to her just how dangerous vampires can be.

Overall, it’s upsetting that he tries to threaten her and make her scared of him. He might have thought it was for her own good, but it did read as somewhat abusive.

7 Bella Did: Used Jacob against Edward

When Bella finds out that she’s pregnant, she wants to keep the baby. Edward is upset because he knows that if she keeps the baby that it will likely kill her. Of course, it’s her decision to decide what to do with her body, but it’s understandable that Edward feels guilty and scared.

Jacob stays around Bella during her pregnancy to protect her from Sam and his pack, but this is just one of many times where Jacob being around caused a wedge between her and Edward.

6 Edward Did: Attempted to kill himself

After Edward mistakenly believes that Bella is dead, he decides that he can’t live in a world without her. Seeing as how it’s nearly impossible for vampires to die, he plans to force Volturi to do it for him.

While this is a pretty troubling thing to do in many ways, it would have devastated Bella if he had gone through with it. Of course, he really believed she was already dead, but it’s still messed up.

5 Bella Did: Did dangerous things to hear Edward’s voice

After Edward broke up with Bella, she was in a horribly depressed state. The breakup hit her extremely hard, and she resorted to dangerous and risky activities to try and have a hallucination of Edward’s voice.

While Bella couldn’t have known it at the time, her death would have devastated Edward. Also, her own life was worth more than that.

4 Edward Did: Messed with her truck to keep her from seeing Jacob

Both Edward and Jacob had moments of acting like jerks when it came to the love triangle with Bella. While Jacob was more outright mean about Edward, Edward didn’t like Jacob much either.

However, it still was Bella’s decision to be around Jacob if she wanted to. Edward tried to keep her from going to see him by ruining her truck. Bella was in no real danger from the werewolves, and she also had no real way of physically stopping Edward from doing things like this. So, it wasn’t okay.

3 Bella Did: Tried to pressure him to sleep together ASAP

One thing that fans don’t talk about enough is how insistent Bella could be about wanting to sleep with Edward. it’s not like she crossed the line into assault, but she did need to respect what Edward wanted a little more.

Even though she was comfortable taking their relationship to the next physical level, Edward wasn’t ready for that step. Maybe it seemed a bit silly to Bella, but it was still his decision to make.

2 Edward Did: Left her and brought his entire family with him

The way Edward broke up with Bella was pretty brutal. He made absolutely sure to devastate her and make her believe he didn’t love her so that she wouldn’t come after him.

Maybe he thought it was the right thing to do, but it was cruel, in a way. He then made his entire family come with him and cut off all contact with Bella thereby cutting off a lot of her support system.

1 Bella Did: Kind of fell in love with Jacob, too

While Edward and Bella were supposed to be soul mates, the break up really changed things because Bella grew close to Jacob. While she might never have loved him in the same way as Edward, there were moments where she did love him and considered what the future with him would look like.

While their connection was explained away by saying that it was because of Renesmee, most fans don’t buy this.
