Twilight Meets The Hunger Games: Gale Vs. Jacob, Who Is The Best ‘Other Man’

Twilight and The Hunger Games both had central love triangles. Jacob and Gale weren’t chosen but each has a claim as the better “other” guy.

While Twilight and The Hunger Games are two very different stories in some ways, there are a number of similarities when it comes to the core love stories. Twilight is more of a straight-up romance with supernatural elements while The Hunger Games is a dystopian sci-fi that features a romance.

However, seeing as they both have love triangles centered around the main heroines, fans often compare and contrast these two. At the end of Twilight, Bella ends up with Edward, not Jacob, and in The Hunger Games, Katniss picks Peeta, leaving Gale as the other man. These “other” guys were pretty great in their own right.

10 Gale: He knew Katniss really well

Katniss and Gale have a long history together in a way that Bella and Jacob don’t. Bella moved to Forks in high school and only really bonded with him then while Katniss and Gale grew up together. Because of this, Katniss and Gale knew each other’s lives, personalities, and issues very well.

They also grew up in such harsh conditions under a totalitarian regime, so they were able to bond in a way that people outside of their situation couldn’t understand.

9 Jacob: He started out as a great friend to Bella

One thing that’s a shame about Jacob’s character arc is that he goes from being a rather lovable and kind person to being pretty angry and problematic. But, at the very least, it’s easy to see why Bella started to like and then love Jacob.

He is a great friend to her and just overall very sweet at first, and his personality seems rather contrasting to Edward’s brooding.

8 Gale: Because Jacob forced Bella to kiss him

One of the worst things Jacob ever does gets overlooked too often with fans, and it’s a big reason why Gale might be better than him. While Gale does have some flaws, he is more respectful of Katniss’s personal autonomy.

Jacob at one point assaults Bella when he kisses her despite Bella telling him no and even pushing him away. It’s one of the most upsetting scenes in the books because Jacob does this, and it’s not even portrayed as being that bad.

7 Jacob: Edward was often too controlling

When Jacob makes Bella kisses him, it definitely wasn’t okay. But Edward wasn’t a saint in how he treated Bella either. So, while Gale and Peeta both have a good relationship with Katniss overall, both Jacob and Edward treat Bella badly in various ways.

Edward can be extremely controlling and at one point even ruins Bella’s truck so she can’t go visit Jacob. He also does things like stalk her and watch her while she sleeps.

6 Gale: Because he looked out for Katniss’ family

One of the best things about Gale is that he is someone that Katniss can rely on. This doesn’t mean that Jacob doesn’t care about Bella’s family as he does help watch out for Charlie, but Gale is particularly an ally for Katniss.

When she volunteers for the Games, Gale promises to help keep her family safe. He does follow through on the promise especially when he gets Prim and her mother out of District 12 before it is destroyed by the Capitol

5 Jacob: He was there for Bella during a difficult time

After Edward leaves Bella and takes his entire family with him, Bella is absolutely devastated. She is in a bad place and she doesn’t really get help for what she’s going through.

However, Jacob does provide a lot of emotional support to her. He is a good friend for her during this difficult time, and it’s no wonder that Bella comes to rely on him and care about him.

4 Gale: He and Katniss looked out for each other for years

One of the best things about Katniss and Gale is that they have both been there for each other for so long. Gale is the person that Katniss relies on and the same is true for Gale with Katniss. They hunt together and often feel similar about the Capitol.

Because of this, Katniss does trust him a lot. They also know how the other works and they are quite similar in some ways especially when it comes to having more stoic personalities.

3 Jacob: He offered a way for Bella to have a normal life

When Bella is torn over Jacob and Edward in Eclipse, one of the biggest pros for Jacob is that she can have a more normal life with him. She won’t have to become a vampire and live forever, and she won’t have to potentially give up all her family and friends.

While, of course, things turn out all right for Bella when she picks Edward anyway, her relationship with Jacob did seem more balanced much of the time.

2 Gale: Because Jacob imprinted on Renesmee

Gale is a better “other” man than Jacob because of Jacbo’s imprinting. There are so many issues with the idea of imprinting, and it’s just really rather disturbing when you think of it.

It’s hard to think of Jacob as a good guy or a worthy love interest when he ultimately starts dating and being with Bella’s daughter at the end of the day.

1 Jacob: Because Gale might have killed Prim

While Jacob imprinting on Renesmee is pretty awful, Gale being possibly responsible for Prim’s death is even worse. While Katniss never knows for sure if the bombs were Gale’s plan or not, she doesn’t care because she finds the strategy so unethical, and she also can’t separate Prim’s death from Gale at this point.

Gale promises to keep her family safe, so when this promise is broken, it ruins their relationship forever.
