It is remarkable to think that it has been 30 years since Twin Peaks first graced the airwaves. Though the show has only run for three seasons and spawned a prequel, it has a cult following that continues to this day.

The first season may have been a mere eight episodes, but they weren’t without some memorable quotes. Here are some of our favorites from the show’s first season.

10 “She’s Dead… Wrapped In Plastic.” – Pete Martell

This is one of the first spoken lines of the series and it sets everything into motion. Angelo Badalamenti’s serene score against the opening credits may lead the novice viewer to believe the series is an exercise in tranquility, but this feeling couldn’t be farther from the truth.

The quiet town of Twin Peaks is struck by a murder of a high school girl, Laura Palmer. At first, it may seem that such an occurrence is a total misnomer. As the series develops, we see that there is a shady side of Twin Peaks that has always existed that is now coming to light.

9 “Leland, What Is Going On In This House?” – Sarah Palmer

Almost no female character gets off easy in this series. Though she isn’t murdered, Sarah Palmer, Laura’s mother, is no exception. Not only is she racked by the murder/death of her daughter, but she is having to deal with the borderline insane antics of her husband, Leland.

During one scene where Leland has the record player blasting as he cries looking at a picture of Laura, Sarah yells, “Leland, what is going on in this house?!” Sarah is genuinely tortured by what is happening, and the fact she can’t lean upon Leland during this difficult time is enough to drive her mad.

8 “Damn Good Coffee!”- Cooper

The FBI sends their best and brightest to help Twin Peaks solve Laura Palmer’s murder in the form of Special Agent Dale Cooper. Though he is completely serious about solving the case, he also develops an affinity for the coffee at the local Double R Diner.

Cooper never passes up an opportunity to have a sip of coffee. During one scene where he tries to break down to the Twin Peaks Sheriff Department the situation at hand, he stops midway through to acknowledge the amazing coffee he’s drinking. We’ll have whatever he’s having, please.

7 “My Log Does Not Judge.”- Log Lady

One of the greatest accomplishments of Twin Peaks is its ability to make its audience wonder just how weirded out they should be. While the infamous character of the Log Lady, Margaret Lanterman, may sound kooky at first, she is taken completely seriously by Agent Cooper and the Twin Peaks law enforcement.

When they first arrive at the Log Lady’s home, Cooper and Sheriff Truman approach with caution. The Log Lady assures them that “My log does not judge.” No matter what, you can count on the Log Lady to steer you in the right direction in Twin Peaks.

6 “I’ve Got Compassion Running Out My Nose, Pal!” – Albert Rosenfield

Not all the FBI agents who pass through Twin Peaks are charmed by it, however. Albert Rosenfield is one of those unimpressed agents, and he can’t help butting heads with several of the locals.

When it comes time for Laura Palmer’s funeral, Albert is reluctant to release her body for the viewing because he still needs to complete his evaluation. When one of the doctors asks Albert if he has no compassion, he responds, “I’ve got compassion running out of my nose, pal!” He goes on to describe his predicament and asks everyone to stay out his way. Definitely the kind of behavior one would expect from a level-headed, compassionate individual.

5 “There’s A Sort Of Evil Out There.” – Sheriff Truman

Sheriff Truman is the rare police officer that doesn’t lose his mind when an FBI agent steps onto his turf to do an investigation. This may be because of the camaraderie he feels with Cooper as an ally in the war against supernatural evil.

Truman posits, “There’s some sort of evil out there… Call it what you want… It takes many forms but it’s been there for as long as anyone can remember and we’ve always been here to fight it.” Truman isn’t a perfect individual, but he maintains his moral footing in a place that seems to be shifting before his very eyes.

4 “Laura Has Secrets Built Around Those Secrets.” – Dr. Jacoby

Dr. Jacoby seems to be the top suspect for the murder of Laura Palmer at first. He isn’t always straightforward in his answers and he seems to be holding some cards close to his chest.

For the early days of the investigation, he’s the person who seems to know the most about Laura, but even his knowledge has limitations. As more is uncovered about Laura’s murder, there remains a struggle to uncover all her secrets. Even someone as professional as Jacoby can’t provide all the answers, and that may be an even more difficult pill to swallow.

3 “Every Day, Once A Day, Give Yourself A Present.” – Cooper

Ever the optimist even in the most disparaging of situations, Cooper finds ways to be happy when there aren’t a lot of reasons to be. How does he accomplish this?

“Every day, once a day, give yourself a present,” Cooper tells Sheriff Truman. The example Cooper gives also speaks to his amiability: a nice cup of coffee. Cooper’s aspirations in life are not huge. He’s not looking to become head of the FBI. He’s just working to solve the case as efficiently as possible, and having as much damn fine coffee as he can along the way.

2 “I Will Kill Again!” – BOB

The character of BOB may not seem very threatening just from his looks. If we were to encounter him among the rest of the residents of Twin Peaks, he probably wouldn’t catch our attention.

As we watch his spirit corrupt others and use them to commit horrendous crimes, he becomes truly terrifying. It is even more horrid knowing that he is not a spirit that can simply be done away with. Once he leaves one vessel, he’s on the loose again, looking for more victims to dispose of. When he says, “I will kill again!” he’s not messing around.

1 “I Feel Like I’m Going To Dream Tonight.” – Laura Palmer, recorder

This quote encapsulates so much of what David Lynch’s art is about: what lies beneath in our subconscious. Dreams and visions are taken very seriously in Twin Peaks, most notably those seen by Cooper. They offer key insights into solving Palmer’s murder and learning more about the evil that haunts the town.

There are plenty of absurd and ridiculous things that occur in Twin Peaks, making it is easy for some viewers to write it off as just gobbly-gook. But one of the reasons that Twin Peaks has stood the test of time is because of the images and sounds David Lynch and Mark Frost brought to the screen that we can’t get out of our heads. They cause us to wonder what lies in our own subconscious and we might find if we poke around.
