Twin Peaks The 10 Most Bizarre Residents Of The Black Lodge

Though Twin Peaks’ central mystery initially revolved around the question of who exactly killed beloved high-schooler Laura Palmer, as the show’s murder mystery began to wrap up, its supernatural lore took center stage.

With the latter half of Twin Peaks’ second season focusing on Cooper’s search for the extra-dimensional realm known as the Black Lodge, the prevalence of the show’s bizarre, supernatural cast of characters began to grow exponentially. In fact, the mystery surrounding the Black and White Lodges arguably became even more fascinating than the Laura Palmer case, with the show’s third season focusing almost entirely on these elements. Of all the residents of the Black Lodge featured in the show, however, these are the ten most bizarre.

10 Mike

While Mike is still undoubtedly one of Twin Peaks’ most bizarre entities, his ability to possess humans – inhabiting the body of shoe salesman Phillip Gerard in the show – makes him appear much more human than the Lodge’s other residents.

Once in league with the malevolent BOB, Mike apparently changed his ways after seeing the face of God and cut off his right arm – severing all ties with the evil entity. Since then, Mike has mostly been a force for good, aiming to put a stop to the machinations of BOB and Judy – even attempting spare Laura Palmer from her grim fate.

9 Doppelgangers

With the duality of man playing a large role in Twin Peaks’ wider mythology, it makes sense that the Black Lodge is able to create evil doppelgangers of those unfortunate enough to enter it. Though their eyes appear a milky white inside the Black Lodge, doppelgangers are indistinguishable from their natural counterparts in the real world.

Notable doppelgangers appearing throughout the show include those of Laura Palmer, Leland Palmer, Annie Blackburn, and Agent Dale Cooper – whose evil counterpart escaped into the real world, becoming one of season 3’s primary antagonists.

8 The Tremonds/Chalfonts

Two of Twin Peaks’ most esoteric and unsettling figures, Mrs. Tremond and her ‘grandson’ Pierre are presumably agents of the Black Lodge, often found impersonating or replacing those connected to the violent events surrounding Twin Peaks and Deer Meadow.

The prevailing theory amongst fans is that the Tremonds are in league with the malevolent entity Judy, with their primary purpose being to misdirect those investigating their violent activities. While this remains just a theory, their presence at the Convenience Store meeting in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me confirms that they are connected to the Lodge in one way or another.

7 The Fireman/The Giant

Perhaps the most benevolent spirit in Twin Peaks, The Fireman – known primarily as the Giant prior to the show’s third season – seems to act as an opposing force to BOB and Judy. Cryptically assisting Cooper throughout the show’s first two seasons, the Fireman makes a major return in season three, attempting to counteract the creation of BOB following the White Sands nuclear test.

The entity also guides Freddie Sykes towards his ‘destiny’ by directing him to wear a super-powered green glove – which ultimately results in BOB’s defeat at the Twin Peaks Sherriff’s Department – and even imparts knowledge upon the dim-witted Andy Brennan to help him rescue Naido.

6 The Jumping Man

Perhaps the most mysterious entity on this entire list, not much is known about the elusive Jumping Man. Whereas most of Twin Peaks’ supernatural entities have a relatively clear allegiance and purpose for existing, the Jumping Man is still shrouded in mystery due to his limited appearances on the show.

First showing up in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me during a meeting between the Lodge’s inhabitants, the Jumping Man appeared once again during the show’s third season, seeming to react negatively to Cooper’s presence at The Dutchman’s. Sharing certain visual similarities to Pierre Tremond, the Man From Another Place, and even Sarah Palmer, the entity remains one of Twin Peaks’ most hotly debated puzzle pieces.

5 The Woodsmen

Briefly seen at the Convenience Store in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the Woodsmen are more prevalent in the show’s third season, depicted as bloodthirsty agents of the Black Lodge. Bearing the resemblance of filthy, unkempt lumberjacks, the Woodsmen came into existence at the same time as BOB and Judy, following the nuclear test in White Sands, New Mexico.

The Woodsmen appear to have served several purposes over the course of the show: opening gateways to certain parts of the lodge, healing Cooper’s mortally wounded doppelganger, and hypnotizing all of White Sands through a radio broadcast in the 1940s. It’s during this broadcast that the Woodsmen reveal their penchant for crushing people’s heads, killing the radio station’s receptionist and DJ in this way – and later doing the same to the unfortunate Bill Hastings.

4 Killer BOB

The primary antagonistic force in the first two seasons of Twin Peaks, BOB is a malevolent entity whose sole purpose is to corrupt and torment his victims, causing widespread fear, pain, and violence. Harvesting the anguish of his victims in the form of ‘garmonbozia’, BOB usually enacts his cruelty through a human host.

It’s revealed in Twin Peaks’ second season that Laura Palmer’s father Leland had been playing host to the entity since childhood and was ultimately responsible for killing his daughter, kicking off the events of the whole series.

3 Phillip Jeffries

Graduating alongside Gordon Cole at Quantico in 1968, Phillip Jeffries was a brilliant FBI agent and key member of the Blue Rose Task Force, who went missing under mysterious circumstances in Buenos Aires in 1987.

Having a strong connection to the Lodges, the enigmatic Jeffries has since shed his corporeal form, transforming into a being resembling a giant kettle and residing in the Dutchman’s Lodge. His ultimate goal is presumably to thwart the machinations of Judy, but it’s also apparent that another entity has been impersonating Jeffries for as-of-yet unconfirmed reasons.

2 Judy/Jowday

The new big bad in Twin Peaks’ third season, Judy is an ancient demonic being, who much like BOB, feasts on the pain and misery she dishes out. The existence of Judy was noted by the Blue Rose Task Force – and in particular Phillip Jeffries – but the being has since proved to be elusive.

It’s suggested in Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier that should Judy wed her male counterpart, they’d produce an even more powerful offspring, potentially leading to the end of life as we know it.

1 The Man from Another Place/The Arm

Arguably the most iconic Black Lodge resident in all of Twin Peaks, the Man from Another Place is the embodiment of Mike’s severed left arm, which takes on a life of its own. The being helps guide Cooper through the events of the show’s first two seasons, appearing in his dreams to dole out cryptic clues surrounding the Laura Palmer case.

In season three, the Man from Another Place takes on a new form, transforming into a tree with a pink, amorphous mass for a head, referring to himself as ‘the arm’.
