Marvel fans are expressing their displeasure over how Black Bolt, the Inhuman ruler of Attilan, was treated in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Multiverse of Madness saw the film’s titular character (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) chased across the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse by the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). The two characters end up on Earth-838, where they are arrested by a variant of Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and introduced to the Illuminati: Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Black Bolt (Anson Mount), Maria Rambeau/Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch), Mister Fantastic (John Krasinski), Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Mordo. Following the Illuminati’s introduction, Scarlet Witch, using an ability known as dream-walking, inhabits the body of her Earth-838 variant and arrives at the Baxter Foundation, where she murders the entire team beginning with Black Bolt, whom Mister Fantastic said could kill Wanda with just a whisper from his mouth. Black Bolt’s death has caused many fans on Twitter to create memes and parodies of this scene.

In a moment evoking genre director Joe Dante, the Scarlet Witch tells Mister Fantastic, “What mouth?” The camera pans to Black Bolt who, upon realizing that his mouth has been magically removed, freaks out and screams, which causes his powers to reverberate inward and blow the back of his head out, instantly killing him.

Fans quickly voiced their displeasure online at Mister Fantastic openly telling the Scarlet Witch about Black Bolt’s one weakness. Others have noted that the character’s death continues to represent Marvel Studios’ lack of interest in the Inhumans property, which has led to both a canceled film and a failed 2017 ABC series.

Despite the Scarlet Witch destroying the Illuminati with relative ease, Olsen revealed that her character wasn’t at her full power because of the dream-walking. “We decided that the limitation is that she’s not in her body,” Olsen said. “She’s in a less-oiled version of her body. So it’s not capable of doing as much as our universe’s Wanda could do, because it’s more about using the body like a not-so-tuned-up car. I wanted it to be easier, but it was amazing to get to have those moments.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness currently has the largest domestic opening weekend of 2022 after earning $185 million at the box office. By comparison, the previous titleholder, The Batman, grossed $134 million in its first three days. However, despite audiences calling the film unlike any of the other MCU installments, Multiverse of Madness has tied with 2011’s Thor for the second-worst CinemaScore rating in the MCU. 2021’s Eternals remains the worst-rated MCU film with a B.
