Twitter Trolls Edit Button Fans With When Everyone Wears A Mask Tweet

Twitter trolled those hoping for an edit button by suggesting it will add one as soon as everyone wears a face mask. The edit button has become one of the most controversial topics on Twitter, and the comment is already reigniting the debate over whether the micro-blogging service should add one.

While Twitter is the go-to place for many seeking the latest news and developments, some have always seen the lack of an edit button as one of the service’s biggest drawbacks. While it would be assumed that adding a feature, that most other social media services already offer, would be easy enough, Twitter has remained steadfast in its belief that an edit button is a bad (and difficult) addition, suggesting it could greatly lead to entire messages being changed after the fact.

Adding to the debate, the official Twitter account recently sent out a Tweet stating “you can have an edit button when everyone wears a mask.” Naturally, the Tweet immediately attracted attention with the responses somewhat split between some urging everyone to wear a face mask while others simply viewing the Tweet as further confirmation that an edit button will never come. Especially considering the fierce debate that’s currently underway in the US over the compulsory wearing of masks.

Edit Buttons & Masks: Two Controversial Topics

While the lack of an edit button has led to many debates about Twitter, on Twitter, masks are proving to be even more controversial. While many are happy to wear a mask under the current COVID-19 conditions, in a bid to slow the spread and limit infections, there are those that have taken issue with the insistence on masks. This has become even more of an issue for some recently, with state officials now looking to mandate the wearing of masks and the threat of enforcement actions for those that don’t.

Due to this, the Tweet not only touches on one controversial topic, but two, and one that’s very highly politically charged at the moment. Of course, Twitter has regularly been criticized recently for what many see as the service taking a political stance on many current topics, and this has even led to the sudden popularity of Parler. An app and service that many now claim to be a free speech version of Twitter, even though others now debate that point.

Regardless of the mask debate, and even if everyone was to suddenly start wearing a face covering, it seems highly unlikely that Twitter would ever honor the Tweet. After all, the company has made it clear that an edit button doesn’t fit the style of the service and has even suggested that variations of an edit button – such as a very short delay window – won’t work either, due to Twitter’s emphasis on once a Tweet is out there, it’s out there.
