Two Classic Gotham Villains are DCs Most Surprising Friends

Warning: Spoilers for Batman: The Long Halloween Special #1

In DC Comics’ Batman: The Long Halloween Special #1, Two-Face is on a mission to get his wife back after she’s been captured by Calendar Man (aka Julian Day), and with the help of a newfound ally, Solomon Grundy, they successfully free her from Julian Day’s imprisonment. Although Two-Face and Solomon Grundy seem like an unlikely pairing, they develop a unique friendship of sorts in this issue.

Batman: The Long Halloween Special #1 from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, is a one-shot follow-up to the wildly successful 13-issue comics series of the same name that was published in 1996. Now, over two decades later, with this new issue, the creators can finally give fans an answer to the infamous question: Who is the Holiday Killer? After Harvey Dent (Gotham’s former straight and narrow district attorney) became Two-Face, he went mad and found himself residing underground in Gotham’s sewage system. It was there that he met Solomon Grundy, who’s already been taking up residence in the city’s waste. Solomon Grundy, whose real name is Cyrus Gold, was once a wealthy man who lived in Gotham City and was eventually murdered. His body was dumped in Slaughter Swamp. While his body was decomposing, his flesh began to mysteriously interact with the swamp’s ecosystem. After many years, he was resurrected into a murderous zombie made out of swamp material. Throughout the stories in the DC Comics’ world, he’s been killed on many occasions but is always reborn in Slaughter Swamp. Harvey Dent’s evolution into Two-Face draws a parallel to Solomon’s cycle of life and death.

In the first few pages of Batman: The Long Halloween Special #1 following a conversation between Commissioner Gordon and Batman as they discuss their now-broken relationship with former ally Harvey Dent, the panels take readers below ground to the Gotham Sewage system. Solomon Grundy is there guarding Two-Face’s living quarters. Two-Face’s wife Gilda enters, and hints at a friendship between the two villains. She says, “I knew if I found you, you’d know where he is. You’re like me. You want to protect him.” As Solomon reaches for the door handle to let Gilda in to see her husband, Two-Face initially thinks it’s Solomon coming to bother him. He admonishes Solomon saying, “Solomon I told you I didn’t want to be disturbed.” It becomes evident that the two villains have a close relationship. As the story unfolds, a dinner date between Gilda and Two-Face is cut short. Calendar Man shows up and, after presumably knocking Gilda unconscious, captures her and throws her in a church confessional.

Realizing he’ll need backup, Two-Face uses the Bat-signal to summon former-friend Batman for help. Batman is initially hesitant to trust Two-Face as he wonders why Calendar Man wants him or his wife. Batman eventually agrees to help rescue Gilda. Readers later learn that one of the reasons why Batman agrees to help Two-Face is because he told him he had a “friend” who could be of assistance. That friend is Solomon. While it might seem strange that Solomon and Two-Face would be friends, they do have some common ground. Before being turned into a zombie, Solomon was Cyrus Gold. Before evolving into Two-Face, Harvey Dent was just Harvey. They both have suffered tragic transformations and both have residences in Gotham’s sewer. It’s possible that the two find a connection in their origin stories and where they’ve ended up.
