Ultramans Kaiju Designs Evoke Classic Monster Movies

Ultraman is back, and his reimagined debut hints at vast “kaiju” monsters to come, evoking the classic “rubber suit” style while still promising compelling combat against Godzilla-like monsters that harken back to the character’s 1960s roots.

In some of the first panels of Rise of Ultraman, which introduces the special forces that hunt kaiju, a brown, wrinkly ghoul creeps out of a meat locker. The horn-covered monster – similar in design but not size to those shown in the 1966 TV show – is easily bested by the United Science Patrol troops. Ultraman doesn’t make his debut in this issue, but the main character, Shin, is poised to be host to Ultraman as he comes into contact with a giant, glowing being. The comic comes after some fanfare for the anime series on Netflix, now in its second season.

The first kaiju introduced in the comic shares none of the immense characteristics of the classics. This monster fits inside a meat locker and doesn’t look like it will grow to tower over skyscrapers. Instead, the monster, which looks like a sock-puppet with teeth, is shot and killed in just a few short pages. Happily, a two-page graphic later in the issue shows an immense kaiju that shares many similarities with the old-school monsters. Ultraman is synonymous with giant kaiju fighting and the old TV series featured quite the cast of rubber-suited monsters.

It’s likely that once the kaiju find their way into this dimension in the future, they will be much, much larger than the meat locker monster – more than enough challenge for Marvel’s Ultraman. In a vignette that follows the main story, a scaly monster shows up and appears just as stiff-armed as in the old monster movies. The fire-breathing beast also has crooked canines that bow outward from its face, seeming to reference ancient art of dragons.

There’s sure to be just as many ugly, thundering monsters as the original TV series. A teaser at the end of the issue shows a kaiju with two devil-like horns hooking above its head and a prominent rhino-like nose. The towering kaiju roars above buildings suggesting the mini monster at the beginning of the comic will not be the typical size for kaiju. And doubtless Japan’s oldest and most popular superhero Ultraman will enlarge to bash the city-threatening monsters.

The Rise of Ultraman #1 from writers Kyle Higgins and Matthew Groomis, with art by Francesco Manna, Michael Cho, Gurihiru, and Ed McGuinness is available now.
