Ultron vs Thanos Who’d Win An MCU Fight (Without Infinity Stones)

Ultron and Thanos are some of the MCU’s most famous antagonists, and although Ultron killed the Mad Titan rather easily in Marvel’s What If…?, a fight between them without Infinity Stones would be another matter entirely. The Infinity Stones are crucial items in the first three phases of the MCU, and provide a key motivation for both the live-action versions of Ultron and Thanos. However, while the stones themselves grant extraordinary abilities to the wielder, both antagonists would be formidable opponents without them.

Created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner to protect Earth from extra-terrestrial threats, Ultron is an AI who became genocidal upon activation during the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron. His first robot body was extremely powerful, similar to Tony Stark’s Iron Man armors. His final and ultimate body, however, was made of vibranium, making him even deadlier. Like Iron Man, Ultron could fire repulsor ray-like blasts from his hands, and manipulate anti-gravity fields, like the Chitauri vehicles in The Avengers. Thanos, by contrast, is a Titan – a nearly-extinct humanoid alien species with remarkable physical strength and durability. Thanos was believed by many to be the most powerful being in the universe, suggesting that he’s far stronger than other Titans.

Ultron fought the Avengers multiple times throughout Age of Ultron, proving to be a formidable opponent, even when fighting multiple heroes at once. In his first true body, Ultron was often damaged or destroyed by Avengers like Captain America or Iron Man, though he’d instantly move his AI into a new body. In his vibranium form, however, he was a far more challenging opponent, though the Avengers still defeated him together in the third act. Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlets for most of Avengers: Infinity War, but perhaps the best demonstration of his strength was in Endgame, where he fought Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, easily overpowering the three without any of the stones augmenting him. This makes it clear that Thanos would defeat Ultron, even without the stones.

As shown throughout the MCU, vibranium is one of the most durable substances in the universe, but it does have its limits. The combination of The Vision’s Mind Stone energy beam, Iron Man’s uni-beam, and Thor’s lightning gradually caused Ultron’s metal body to melt. In his fight against the Avengers in Endgame, Thanos’ double-bladed sword, which was most likely made of Uru, destroyed Captain America’s shield with repeated blows. In a one-on-one fight, Thanos could easily break through Ultron’s armored body and destroy him.

Ultron’s weaponry combine Stark and Chitauri technology, and while his energy blasts are deadly, they still wouldn’t be enough to defeat Thanos. Against Iron Man in his Mark LXXXV Armor (whose weaponry almost certainly outclassed Ultron’s), Thanos used his sword to deflect Tony’s deadly uni-beam, which Thor augmented with his lightning. Ultron may be a threat to The Avengers, but he’d be no match for Thanos.

The Infinity Stones can be used for an instant victory for whoever wields them. Even while dying from a lethal strike by Thor, Thanos used the stones to wipe out half of all life and heal his wounds. In Marvel’s What If…?, Ultron used the Mind Stone to instantly bisect Thanos before the two could properly fight. In a fight without any Infinity Stones, however, Thanos would destroy Ultron, further cementing him as one of the MCU’s deadliest threats.
