Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

The titles of the episodes of The Umbrella Academy season 3 have been revealed, and while the plot of this new season is unknown, the titles reveal some potential details about it. Created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy is a comic book series that made the jump to the world of streaming in February 2019 thanks to Netflix. The series was an instant success, and it didn’t take long for it to be renewed for a second season, with the new episodes arriving in July 2020. Fans are now waiting for season 3 to drop, and in the meantime, there have been many theories on what could happen.

The Umbrella Academy is a different type of superhero story, with the title team being seven adopted siblings who along with other 36 babies around the world, were born on the same day, at the same time, and to women who weren’t pregnant when the day began. Scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves set out to adopt as many of those babies as he could but he only got seven, and as they developed superpowers, he trained them and formed the team “The Umbrella Academy”. Season 1 was all about the Hargreeves reuniting for Reginald’s funeral after not talking or seeing each other for years and joining forces to stop the apocalypse, but they failed to stop the end of the world, so in order to survive, they jumped to a safer place and point in time. Season 2 caught up with the team in Dallas, Texas, in 1963, where they successfully prevented the apocalypse this time, but their actions in the past changed their present.

At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2, the Hargreeves returned to their present (2019) and learned that Reginald is still alive and instead of creating the Umbrella team, he formed The Sparrow Academy, with six different kids and Ben, who is also alive in this timeline. Season 3 will then see the Umbrella and Sparrow teams coexisting in the same timeline, but details about the plot and the villain to defeat are still unknown. However, the titles of season 3’s episodes can reveal some details about the new season, some of which connect to the Hotel Oblivion comic book storyline. Here’s what The Umbrella Academy season 3 episode titles mean:

Meet The Family

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

As season 2 ended with the Sparrow Academy appearing in the shadows, The Umbrella Academy season 3 will surely start by introducing this new team not only to the audience but the Umbrellas as well. Little is known about the members of the Sparrow Academy except for their names and a bit about their personalities, so this first episode could be the one that shows what each one is capable of. There’s a lot of speculation about the Sparrow Academy members, especially when it comes to Christopher (played by “Existential Dread Inducing Psykronium Cube”, according to Netflix), the only non-human (at least physically) member of the group who is a floating cube with a green light. This episode might also show a bit of the backstory of the team, mostly why Reginald decided to choose different kids, though that might also be shown later on in the season.

World’s Biggest Ball of Twine

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

It’s unlikely episode 2 of The Umbrella Academy season 3 will deal with the literal World’s Biggest Ball of Twine, and it instead might be a reference to all the timelines the Hargreeves have created through Five’s time-travel abilities and their actions while in the 1960s. Time-travel is a complex subject and every movie, TV show, book, and more addresses it differently and creates its own rules – and in the case of The Umbrella Academy, there are a lot more physics involved due to Five reverting to his teenage body while retaining his consciousness and memories, which denote his real age, so the “ball of twine” could refer to all the timelines getting tangled, in a way.

Pocket Full of Lightning

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

The title of episode 3 might be related to that of episode 4 (more on that one in a few), but it can go two ways. As mentioned above, it’s unknown what the powers of the Sparrow Academy members are, so one of them might have powers related to lightning, which could be key in defeating whatever threat they come across or it could be a potential trigger for something bigger and disastrous, as was Vanya’s case in season 1. The other possibility is that it’s a tease of this season’s villain, and as the Netflix series has taken many liberties with the characters and especially the villains, a big antagonist like Dr. Terminal, Scientific Man, or even Murder Magician could have been given powers related to lightning.

Kugelblitz

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

During Netflix’s Geeked livestream, where the titles of the episodes were revealed, showrunner Steve Blackman invited the audience to look up the meaning of “kugelblitz”, which is a real world. “Kugelblitz” is a term in astrophysics that refers to a black hole formed from radiation as opposed to matter, and are considered as possible future black hole starship engines. Again, this title might be strongly connected to the previous one, but more interestingly is how it cleverly teases more time-travel problems for the teams, which (again) might be triggered by either a villain or a member of the Sparrow Academy.

Kindest Cut

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

Episode 5’s title is a bit tricky to analyze as it doesn’t offer anything that can be related to the Umbrella or Sparrow Academies. However, DigitalSpy points out that it might originate from the phrase “the unkindest cut” found in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. In it, it’s used to describe an insult or betrayal by someone considered a friend. In this case, it might mean something painful delivered from a place of love – so it might come from Reginald if he has developed a bond with the Sparrows.

Marigold

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

The title “Marigold” is a treat to fans of The Umbrella Academy comic books, and it might hint at a big mystery finally being addressed. Marigold is what gave the 43 children their extraordinary powers, meaning it’s those spheres of light seen in The Umbrella Academy season 1 that Reginald released from a jar. Speaking to AWN, VFX supervisor Everett Burrell revealed that Marigold also appeared during Ben’s death in season 2, and were those gold flakes of dust he turned into. Taking all of this into account, this might be the episode that finally explains the origin of the lights, why Reginald had them, how they got to the mothers of the kids, and more.

Auf Wiedersehen

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

“Auf Wiedersehen” is the German phrase for “goodbye”, which makes fans believe this episode will see the death of a beloved character, with many leaning towards Klaus simply because of the “goodbye” tattoo on his hand. However, and as it’s the second episode with a title in German, it might once more be related to this season’s villain – and if a certain hotel is to appear, this could be the episode where the chaos and riot begins.

Wedding at the End of the World

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

Episode 8’s title appears to be a reference to My Chemical Romance’s song “Party at the End of the World”, but this doesn’t say much. By the time season 3 begins, the only single ones would be Luther, Vanya, and Diego, as Five isn’t interested in relationships, Klaus is all about free love, and Allison is still married. This could also refer to the members of the Sparrow Academy, but the “wedding” part of the title might not be the important one, as the second part is hinting at yet another apocalypse.

Six Bells

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode Titles Explained

Out of all the episode titles of The Umbrella Academy season 3, this is the hardest to decipher, but Blackman promised it will make sense once the audience has watched the season. Until then, there’s nothing to make out of it.

Oblivion

Last but definitely not least, the biggest title of the season is that of the final episode: Oblivion. The Umbrella Academy season 1 covered Volume 1: Apocalypse Suite, season 2 was all about Volume 2: Dallas, so season 3 is strongly believed to take inspiration from Volume 3: Hotel Oblivion. In the universe of The Umbrella Academy, Hotel Oblivion is a creation of Reginald Hargreeves that isn’t what it seems. It appears to be a luxury hotel, but in reality, it’s a prison for those enemies defeated by the Umbrella Academy, in which the rooms have a lot of self-help material in order for the residents to “rehabilitate”, the food has no flavor, the TV shows surreal cartoons, and the view out of the window is that of a strange dimension. With Reginald still alive in this new timeline and the Sparrow Academy still working together, it’s possible he built the hotel to house those bad guys defeated by the Sparrows and it will all be revealed at the end of the season. Now, this season might either see the prisoners breaking out, as happened in the comics, or the creation of the hotel by the end of the season in order to contain whatever threat the teams had to face in the previous episodes.

As Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy has made many changes to the source material (which have worked wonderfully, by the way), it’s tricky to deduce what season 3 will bring based on the titles of the episodes, but they could at least lead the audience in the right direction. Some of these might make more sense once the trailer for season 3 is released, so fans should keep an open mind about everything.
