According to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End lead designer Ricky Cambier, Naughty Dog’s upcoming action-adventure game will shed some light into Nathan Drake’s mysterious childhood.

Now that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has gone gold, and there’s only two weeks to go before gamers can get their hands on the game, Naughty Dog have been busy getting players up to speed on what they can expect in Nathan Drake’s final adventure. After showcasing some of the sights and sounds of Uncharted 4 in yesterday’s final gameplay trailer, lead designer Ricky Cambier has now shed some light on what the game’s story will entail.

In a new video interview on Sony’s YouTube channel – which can be seen below – Cambier states that Nathan Drake is “shrouded in a lot of mystery”, and Uncharted 4 will unravel some of that mystery by exploring Nathan’s childhood and his relationship with his older brother Sam.

“We don’t know a lot about his childhood and what happened, so we bring a character like Sam in and now you get to meet his older brother. And you get to see a little about what that relationship is like and how formidable that was to who Nathan Drake is.”

Uncharted 3 contained a flashback scene dedicated to a young Nathan Drake, but nothing was really revealed about his upbringing or Sam. Given that Uncharted 4’s narrative will be driven by Nathan’s reunion with Sam, it’s safe to assume that we will get a lot more of Nathan’s (and Sam’s) backstory than in any of the previous games.

Given that this is the final Uncharted game, it’s good to see Naughty Dog not holding anything back narrative-wise. While it’s been well-documented that Uncharted 4’s story “changed 100%” after directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley came on, the duo’s work on The Last of Us, especially the relationship between Joel and Ellie, should give fans confidence that a game featuring Nathan Drake’s backstory will be nothing less than a satisfying ride.

In addition to the new story details, Naughty Dog’s Director of Communications Arne Meyer was also featured in the video. While he doesn’t reveal any new details, Meyer does state that the team has put together what they believe to be the “best version of Uncharted” and that it was great to “wrap up some of [Nathan’s] storylines and answer some of these questions”.

While this sounds like the usual PR spin on things, Meyer’s words do hold some ground based on previous statements made about the game. Naughty Dog estimates that Uncharted 4 will offer up 10 times the playable space of the previous games, making it easily the biggest game the developer has ever made.

But beyond the size of the game world, Uncharted 4’s ending is the one thing that every fan is looking forward to. With Druckmann stating that the ending will be divisive, and Meyer implying that only “some” storylines will be concluded, who knows what Naughty Dog has in store. One thing is for sure, we’ll finally get an answer on whether Nathan Drake lives or dies at the conclusion of Uncharted 4.

We – and many fans – will certainly laugh and cry when Uncharted 4 is all over, but perhaps the prospect of The Last of Us 2 will help soften the thought of saying goodbye to Nathan Drake.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is set for launch on May 10, 2016 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
