Uncle Ben Just Became SpiderMans Ultimate Villain

Warning: contains a preview for Amazing Fantasy #4!

Few deaths loom larger over Spider-Man’s life than that of his beloved Uncle Ben. Spider-Man’s failure to save Ben was the catalyst for his superhero career; it was even Uncle Ben who taught him “with great power comes great responsibility.” But in a mysterious land, one of dragons and elves, Ben has become Spider-Man’s greatest nemesis. Readers can see this horrifying transformation in a preview for Amazing Fantasy #4, on sale in print and digital November 3.

The story of Spider-Man and Uncle Ben is one of comics’ classic origin stories: Ben is killed by a thief Spider-Man spitefully refused to stop earlier that evening. The guilt Peter Parker feels over this failure has driven him ever since, turning him into a walking embodiment of his uncle’s belief in great power and great responsibility. Recently, in the pages of Amazing Fantasy, a young Peter Parker – still early in his career as Spider-Man – is whisked away to a land of fantasy, along with Captain America and Black Widow. Upon arriving in this mysterious world, young Peter is reunited with Ben; his uncle has been living with the island’s inhabitants, and it is clear Ben is hiding something from his nephew. In a preview for Amazing Fantasy #4, Ben turns on Spider-Man, dealing him an enormous blow without lifting a hand. The issue is written and drawn by Kaare Andrews, with art by Brian Reber and letters by Joe Sabino.

Last issue, Peter was badly injured during a battle when Uncle Ben hurled him from the back of a dragon. Now, Ben stands over a broken and imprisoned Peter, saying Peter “killed [him] first” and took him from Aunt May, leaving him “in darkness.” Ben tells Spider-Man that no amount of swinging from webs or superheroics can make up for his failure. Sobbing and confused, Spider-Man tells Ben he is sorry, but Ben will not hear it. Ben and a shadowy figure then leave Spider-Man, making their way to where Captain America is being held. Ben takes Cap’s shield from him, and the mysterious figure tells Captain America that Cap and the others have “destroyed themselves.”

Uncle Ben is a saintly figure. As a loving father figure, he inspired Spider-Man, not only teaching him about great power and great responsibility, but instilling in him the moral foundation that makes him one of Marvel’s (and comics’) greatest heroes. The guilt from Uncle Ben’s death has been the driving force behind Spider-Man’s career, but in this strange, dark realm, readers learn it was all for naught, as Uncle Ben rejects Spider-Man and everything he stands for, telling his nephew he can never atone for his actions. For Spider-Man, this is a devastating blow – the exact fear that lies at the heart of all his efforts, confirmed by the person he believes he failed most.

The question then becomes: who is the shadowy figure accompanying Uncle Ben? Is it possible they’ve corrupted Ben’s spirit, or is something even more disturbing afoot? If a villain truly wanted to utterly defeat Spider-Man, there is no lower blow than turning his beloved Uncle Ben against him. There is of course the possibility that this is not Uncle Ben and could be some sort of illusion, but his words about Captain America inspiring him in his youth seem to confirm that if he is a fake, he doesn’t know it. It is hard to imagine so revered a figure as Uncle Ben turning into a villain, but this is a possibility Spider-Man faces when Amazing Fantasy #4 hits retailers November 3.
