Universal Monsters: 5 Monsters Who Deserve A Modern Reboot (& 5 Who Don’t)
Universal monsters terrorized audiences for decades. From The Raven to The Wolf Man, which Universal Studios dark classics deserve a movie reboot?

Even if you’re not familiar with the Universal classic monsters as a concept, everyone in the world is undoubtedly familiar with the monsters that fall into this category, whether they realize it or not. This series of horror films produced by Universal Studios began in the 1920s and carried on all the way up until the 1960s, and it made actors like Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney, and Boris Karloff into veritable legends in the film world.
And after a significant hiatus, it appears that Universal has a lot of interest in reviving their old monster classic. The reboot of the entire Universal monster universe has already begun, but with over forty years of established history obviously there is a lot that has yet to be re-explored. There are a lot of monsters to choose from, but here are the 5 classic monsters that should be included in the reboot, and 5 that should be left in the past.
10 Do: The Raven
Monsters can come in all shapes and sizes, and oftentimes some of the most frightening monsters in the world are just regular humans. Or rather, completely unhinged humans. That is certainly the case when it comes to the Universal horror classic The Raven.
The Raven actually focuses on a surgeon who is obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe and who tortures and mutilates his “patients” for his own pleasure. At the time it was made the film was too gruesome for many to tolerate, but the concept is a truly horrifying one that still holds up today.
9 Don’t: The Incredible Shrinking Man
Without a doubt, the visual effects that were used in The Incredible Shrinking Man were very impressive for their time, and audiences were understandably horrified by this simple premise used to a horrifying end. But the thing is, The Incredible Shrinking Man is a bit of a one-trick pony.
The idea is a pretty intriguing one, but it’s not one that holds up its horror elements as well today. With comedic movies like Downsized making this concept seem more fun than scary, it seems safe to say that The Incredible Shrinking Man can be put to rest for good.
8 Do: Creature From The Black Lagoon
Film going audiences have undoubtedly evolved since the era of Universal movie monsters, but the truth is, everyone still loves a good movie monster, don’t they? Creature From the Black Lagoon is undeniably one of the most iconic Universal movie monsters in history, and this memorable creature is one that can be pretty easily translated to a more current storyline.
We can live without a reboot of the whole creature-falls-in-love-with-human-woman plotline, but the idea of a group of scientists going on an expedition and discovering some previously undiscovered and terrifying beast is a pretty solid basis for any horror story.
7 Don’t: The Invisible Man
Rumor has it that there is already a reboot of The Invisible Man in the works, and we aren’t going to dismiss the idea outright until we actually see it for ourselves. However, it is safe to say that The Invisible Man is one of the least interesting ideas for a Universal monster reboot.
As with The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Invisible Man is a special effects trick that was very impressive at the time that the original film was released, but that just isn’t that cool in this day and age of incredible visual trickery. And beyond that trick, the idea doesn’t have a lot to offer.
6 Do: The Wolf Man
Horror creators are always trying to come up with new and unique ideas for horror movie monsters, but there are also a lot of old classics that continually come up in horror films over the years. The popularity of these kinds of creatures tends to ebb and flow, and at this point, it feels like werewolf-oriented horror stories are in their ebb stage at this point in time.
However, that just means that werewolf horror movies are poised to come back into style. And the idea of The Wolf Man is cool, but the actual product looks painfully dated, so it’s really due for an update.
5 Don’t: The Mummy
So why isn’t The Mummy worthy of a reboot, you may ask? Well, the answer is obvious. Because it literally just got one, and it was pretty lame. The whole concept behind The Mummy is a pretty cool one, and it’s clear that it has enough interesting ideas and material to make a pretty awesome reboot.
I mean, the Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy is awesome. However, this latest iteration of this old Universal movie monster idea was just not that interesting. The movie made a decent amount at the box office, but ultimately it was an extremely forgettable film.
4 Do: The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
Well, since the real-life Notre Dame recently burst into flames and was nearly destroyed, what better time to bring back this classic Universal monster tale? There is something that is so universally moving about the story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and honestly what makes it work so well as a horror film is the fact that the “monster” in this movie is no monster at all.
The real monsters are the humans that mistreat Quasimodo for no other reason than that he is different, and it seems like that unfortunate reflection on society’s behavior at large resonates with a lot of people.
3 Don’t: Dracula
Monsters tend to become trendy on a cyclical pattern, and since we’re on the tail end of a massive explosion of vampire popularity it doesn’t really feel like a great time to be bringing back the most iconic vampire of all, Dracula.
There have already been dozens of different interpretations of the Dracula story and character anyway, so it seems like a waste to retread this already beaten path when there are so many other great monsters who have a lot of untapped potential left. Dracula will inevitably come back to the big screen someday, but now just doesn’t seem like the right time.
2 Do: Frankenstein
Mary Shelley probably still doesn’t get all of the credit that she deserves for creating such an avant-garde horror monster like Frankenstein. Boris Karloff did such an incredible job portraying Frankenstein’s monster in the Universal monster movies that his made-up face has become synonymous with the character itself, but to be honest, the whole story of Frankenstein seems more relevant than ever.
It’s becoming even easier to believe that some mad scientist could reanimate a hodgepodge of human body parts, and exploring the dangers of pioneering a frontier that humankind doesn’t even fully understand yet feels very appropriate for this day and age.
1 Don’t: The Phantom Of The Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is yet again one of those stories that have just been done so many times that it doesn’t seem prudent to do it over again. Plus, the opera isn’t even a thing anymore. There have been a lot of spectacular adaptations of the Phantom before.
But to be honest, at this point in our cultural development it’s more than a little gross to romanticize a movie about a creepy stalker whose obsession with a young woman causes incomprehensible destruction. If anyone is in the mood for a good Phantom of the Opera adaptation, then the original Universal monster version is more than adequate.
