Supermassive Games officially unveils Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, which is an on-rails virtual reality shooter experience set in the Until Dawn universe.
The player choice-driven horror game Until Dawn proved to be a surprise hit for Sony, with the brand new IP earning a spot as one of the top selling games of August 2015. Considering the sales success of the game, most weren’t surprised when talks of a sequel came not long after the debut of the original.
What was surprising, however, were the rumors that the followup to Until Dawn was apparently going to be an on-rails virtual reality shooter called Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. Supermassive Games was quick to say the rumors were not true, but their obfuscation was short-lived. At Paris Games Week, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood was confirmed for next year.
By all accounts it appears the rumors were completely true: Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is an on-rails VR shooter experience, wherein the player is on a rollercoaster, and must shoot various enemies pulled from the main Until Dawn game. Rush of Blood supports PlayStation Move as well as traditional controller inputs, and PlayStation VR is required to play it.
PlayStation VR will allow players to see through the eyes of one of the characters from Until Dawn, someone that suffers from mental illness. We won’t state exactly who in order to avoid spoilers, but those that actually played the game should have a good idea as to who that character is.

After Supermassive Games denied they were working on Rush of Blood, it was speculated that Sony had handed off the game to another studio to allow Supermassive to work on a true Until Dawn 2. After all, Rush of Blood is a far cry from what made Until Dawn appealing to begin with, and it seems odd for the series to go in such a drastically different direction. Supermassive Games is promising that player choice will still play an important role in Rush of Blood at least, but we’ll have to wait and see exactly how important it is in the final game.
That being said, the horror genre does lend itself well to virtual reality, and we can’t fault Sony for wanting to use the Until Dawn name to push PlayStation VR. Hopefully Rush of Blood isn’t indicative of what we can expect from the Until Dawn franchise as a whole in the future – as we’d prefer a true sequel with similar gameplay mechanics to the original – but Rush of Blood may just surprise us.
How do you feel about Until Dawn: Rush of Blood? Does it make you want to buy PlayStation VR? What would convince you to pick up Sony’s VR headset when it releases next year? Sound off in the comments below and give us your thoughts on Until Dawn and PlayStation VR.
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood will release at some point in 2016, exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR.
